breast & bottle feeding

I'm hoping to soley breast feed but would like DH to be involved in feeding the baby also. Would love your advice on bottles that you find your baby adapts to well ALONG with the breast. Also, breast pump info?? Thanks!

Emma was 100% BF and Jeremy is 99% BF. I use Playtex Nursers when I have to run out without him. For me they have worked best.

ALSO, I dont need to pump all the time I only need to have 4oz frozen (in case of emergency) and 2oz in the fridge. I have a single Medela electric pump. Works great for me!

I also use the playtex nursers. My son finally took the natural latch nipples after days of fighting it. I have a double Medela PISA because I work full-time and have to pump 3x a day but if you are going to pump less frequently you could probably use a hand pump. I used the Avent Isis when I went back part-time and had to pump 1x a day and it worked just fine.

That's the one I was looking at - the Advent Isis. I won't be working so how often will I have to pump if I want DH to be able to feed the baby a bottle a day?

for one bottle a day you should only have to pump 1x. You just have to pump the feeding that your DH will be doing. But in order to get that first bottle you might have to pump extra after each feeding to build up a small supply for bottles. I just gave my son formula for that first bottle.

When my son was about 2 months old, he used to wake up in the middle of the night for a feeding but would only eat for like 5 mins before he went back to sleep. Since I was heading back to work I used this opportunity to build up my freezer supply and made him a small bottle of formula (3oz) and then I would pump this session and usually got about 6-10 ounces.

Thanks so much for the info! I'm sure as I get further along I'll get more info but for now... Can I pump and just keep some in the freezer (or fridge?) for if and when he feeds? Or do I need to pump ONLY when he'll be feeding? I'm only just learning this stuff now...thanks!!

Re: breast & bottle feeding

We used the Dr. Brown's bottles and Angela did not have one bit of trouble going back and forth. I started pumping right away, and DH had plenty of breast milk bottles to give. Good luck....BF is so totally worth it, give it a shot! You can keep breast milk in the fridge for 4 days. You can freeze it for up to 3 months in your regular freezer, longer if you have a separate freezer that is used for storage (ie not opened all the time). So, no you do not only pump right before he will be freezing, you can 'stock up' - both are easy to warm up by just running the bag under hot water. And the Medela Pump in Style double electric pump is the way to go - a little pricey, but in the long run WAY less than you'll spend on formula. FM if you need any more info!
