Any one else have a breech baby? I have a c-section scheduled for May 3rd in case this baby doesn't turn - is it dangerous to go into labor if the baby is breech? The girls from work are telling me it is - something to do with the umbilical cord prolapsing. On May 3rd I will be 39 weeks but if I go by my original due date of May 2nd, I'll be a day past my due date. And I'm currently measuring 2 1/2 weeks ahead of schedule. I'm seeing my doctor on Saturday but wanted to see if anyone had a c-section beacuse of this and could share their experiences....

Re: Breech baby/c-section question?
I did. I was about at 35 weeks when all of a sudden Patrick did a total flip. (I saw it happen) The doctor reccomended that we do a c-section becaues me fluids were low & he wasn't able to attempt to reposistion him. I went in a week before my due date. He was a healthy baby.
I'm not sure how dangerous it is to deliver natural. (My sister & I were both breech and my Mom deleivered us natural) I think they are just so afraid now that because they have the ability they would prefer to do it by c-section.

Re: Breech baby/c-section question?
Gabriella was breech and she wouldn't flip. I wanted to avoid a c-section as much as possible, so I decided to have the version done. I have information if you would like it. I know Trish was also measuring big and her Dr wouldn't advise it. Typically it has to be done by 36 weeks to be successful.
If interested, also, accupunture is supposed to be also successful for getting the baby to turn.
As for going in to labor....Most likely it would be fine unless you had an extremely quick labor. My OB advised me to go to the hospital sooner than he typically recommended if the version didn't work and I went in to labor. Breech V-delivery is rarely done now because of complications and probably lawsuits.

My child is breech also and we will be scheduling my c-section on Monday. I won't let them do the version. I am so uncomfortable I honestly wish they would do it now.

Re: Breech baby/c-section question?
There are a lot of things you can do to help increase your chances of the baby turning..NATURAL things..but I personally would have the version done. My c/s was, as most know, a very horrible experience that has caused me great emotional and phsyical pain. But everyone is different.
There is a chiropractic technique called the Webster Techique that almost always turns babies..it did not work for me, but it almost always works. Do a google search about turning the baby. But I would have the version. It is safer than a c/s and done in a medical safe enviroment.
It is NOT dangerous for a healthy pregnant women with a healthy baby to go into natural labor and then have a c/s...I was LIED to about this!! Don't let anyone fool you like I was. Cord prolaspe can happen even in a non-breech birth. Certain breech types lend itself more to this...but it is still rare. It means that the cord comes out before the baby does. It is dangerous but not common or normal. I had a Frank Breech which was VERY safe to go into natural labor with but a doctor 100% lied to me and I will forever regret not walking out of the office that day. You should give yourself a chance to go into labor naturally.
Also, I don't know any medical professional on LI that allows a breech natural birth. I wanted to try it and was told I was basically nuts, even though it is done all over the World . But you can discuss with your doctor ways to make a c/s better for you and your baby. Things like NOT allowing your hands to be tied down during the surgery, having music playing that you pick out, breastfeeding in the OR, having the baby stay with you in recovery, being allowed to eat normally after 24 hours, having a lacation consultants phone number with you in case you have trouble bfing since it is more difficult after surgery. A c/s is MAJOR surgery but it is also the birth of your child...you deserve to have it be special, unlike mine.
If you need anything please let me know. Having a breech baby was very tramatic and emotional for me. I am here to help and listen.

Re: Breech baby/c-section question?
Michele I have read MANY time how upset you are about Molly's birth. While you are certainly entitled to your opinions and you are VERY educated on a lot, I personally find it very inappropriate for you to take a subject that is VERY emotional for you and try and scare the crap out of people. You are the ONLY person that I have ever talked to that is so traumatized from their c-section (and you are certainly entitled to feel that way) but many many many of my girlfriends have had them and none of them are this devasted by it, nor do they try to scare you about it. The only warnings I got from ANY of them, was ask about wearing headphone for the second half of the surgery because you may not want to hear the discussion of the second half of the surgery, request a special diet food for the hospital because one friend was given meatloaf as her first meal and it was too heavy for her, and to watch where the seams are on the garments that you will be wearing post surgery.
In my case I am having A LOT of complications. A version is very dangerous in my case. Both to me and the baby. It is not always that simple. My doctor is known for them on LI and I am STILL not willing to risk it. There are risks to an inversion no matter the method. I too have researched there are a lot of things to be considered. To say that it is medically safer than a c-section I think is erroneous to say. Both have risks as does natural labor. I personally feel that while you are very educated in many many things you need to word things a little more carefully. You have had your beautiful daughter, that can't be changed, state the facts not your opinion and please stop trying to scare people. I have made peace with the fact that my little on has been pretty much in the same position since at least 18 weeks and is not turning. It obviously likes it. I am not going to go through a procedure which may not work to have the baby go right back to where it wants to be!!!
Please be more careful with how you word things.

Re: Breech baby/c-section question?
My boy was breech the whole time. And at my 32 week sono, he measured big - 5.5 lbs to be exact. At 36 weeks, my doc did another sono and still breech. So that's when we were presented with our options. The doc would do a version if we wanted to, but based on his medical advice and based on MY situation, we chose NOT to have a version done. We scheduled a c/s a week before my actual due date and decided to play the wait and see game. We did schedule the c/s for a week before based only on his size (and yes, I know the estimates can be up to a lb. off, but we found out in the end, mine was right on!).
All that went out the window when my water broke at 37 weeks. And it gushed big time because he was breech! I was admitted to the hospital right away, and they did yet another sono and he hadn't turned.
I do not regret one bit that we did not try the version. It was given a 50-50 chance of working, and if it did, there was more of a chance he would turn back after that. I never went into labor, my water broke and he was born via c/s 3 hours later. He was healthy and we have a beautiful baby boy who is almost 1!!

Re: Breech baby/c-section question?
Thank you all for your responses - it's so reassuring to know others have been through this and to hear your stories!
To chmlengr (sorry don't know your first name.....!) I am measuring big too - at 33 weeks my little one was measuring 6 pounds so I really think a version is not the best thing for me right now - that coupled with the other risks have made me decide against it. Seems to be the norm to schedule the c-section a week before the due date but I do think I will go early - esp. given the size of this baby....but i guess you never know. I will prepare myself for a BIG water break if it does happen though....I guess I will plan on going straight to the hospital if I feel contractions or my water breaks - it is all so nerve-wracking though!!!!! My first baby shower is this weekend and I think my second is the weekend after so hopefully this little bean can hold out until then!
Thanks again, Bryanne

Re: Breech baby/c-section question?
My Tara was a breech baby and we tried a version and were unsuccessful. It later turned out that the cord was around her neck 2x so it was impossible for her to turn. I was scheduled for a c/s on July 19th and I went into labor on the night of the 12th. My water never broke but I was definitely in labor. The doctors are very swift about getting you into the room and getting it done. I got to the hospital around 1 or 1:30am and she was born at 3am.
Good luck to you. If you have any other questions about a breech baby, version, or c/s (and c/s recovery), please feel free to ask, I will definitely share some of my knowledge as a BTDT preggo with you.
ETA: my due date was July 21st.

Re: Breech baby/c-section question?
Kiera was not breech but I had a c-section so I just wanted to offer you some feelings on it. My birth experience was very special to me and although I was a little upset during my post-partum stage about having a section I can tell you that I got over it really fast. A c-section was the safest way for Kiera to be born and every expecting mother says that all they want is for a healthy baby. So IMO go with the c-section and don't try to do anything to make the baby turn. I don't know what the risks are percentage wise for having a version but I do think that the risks of anything going wrong during a c-section are quite low. So I would say go with the c-section.
MY friend who delievered twins had delievered one of them breech. The baby was under 4 pounds so maybe that makes it easier?
To me it all comes down to how much you trust your doctor. When my doctor told me that a c-section was the safest way for my baby to be born I said alright, let's do it. And that was after I was pushing for 2 hours!!! I just wanted my little peanut to be safe and heathly.
I don't know if that helps at all. If you have any questions about the c-section please feel free to FM me. I am more than happy to help answer any questions about it.

Re: Breech baby/c-section question?
Well, even though I asked about the possibility of a version (because I had no idea what the exact circumstances are) I didn't mean to sound as if I was pushing it on anyone. I know it can be risky procedure and was nervous myself when I had to make the decision and go with it. Then I was nervous about labor.
There are other non-invasive techniques (like accupuncture) that I had researched in depth. I think any procedure has risks and should always be discussed with your own Dr and decide what works best for you.
I hope this month flies by for you and have fun at your showers!

Re: Breech baby/c-section question?
I also said that there are natural, non-invasive things you can do such as the chiropractor or even playing music low on your belly.....I am NOT scaring anyone but telling them to be mindful of their options during a c/s such as their hands being tied down or the ability to bf in the OR. How is that scary? MOST women don't care at all about having a c/s but if you are asking for advise about it then most likely you are looking for answers and other ideas. And like I said in my post that not every women feels like I do but if you can avoid major surgery then in most cases people do! and typically a turn is less risky than a c/s...NOT in ALL cases! And I also answered the question about going into labor...it is not unsafe in most cases and people at work, NOT me are saying scary things about cord prolaspe.
