Brick patio questions

Brick patio questions

Our contractor has suggested pouring 3 inches of concrete and then laying cambridge brick on top of it. He says it is better than using sand b/c the sand can wash away.

Here's my question: what happens in the wintertime? How does the concrete expand and contract? If so, will it affect the stability of the brick layer?

He says I have nothing to worry about....but I worry. Does anyone have any experience in this area?

Re: Brick patio questions

Not an expert, but my sister just got a new brick patio and there is cement under it. I think the cement is good because it stops weeds from growing inbetween the bricks. She has not had any problems.

As far as the contracting bit, I have no idea...sorry

Something else to think about are TAXES....pouring concrete means adding a permanent structure that you may have to pay taxes on. Might want to ask the contractor!!

Thanks for the warning but it is an existing concrete patio in front of my condo. The concrete is 20 years old and is in need of replacement.

Re: Brick patio questions

missmmpr, thanks for the info. i figured the mortar would go between the bricks but had not heard about concrete base below the brick.

i did a few google searches and found a few 'how to' guides on brick patios...but they all referenced laying a landscaping cloth for the weeds and using sand on top.

i am glad to know at least one other person is aware of this approach!

Re: Brick patio questions

we did a brink walkway, and our guy suggested the sand. Because if you ever need to replace something it is easier.
Plus with the sand it can expand/contract according to the weather.
