Dress sizes are always much larger then your actual size. They are measured differently. I'm not sure what I was ordered maybe a 12 or 14 when I'm actually a 9. So, don't worry about it. I would definitely order the size they are telling you. Its always easier to take in a dress if it's too big then let it out if its too small.

I wear a 14-16 and they ordered me a 22....it was one size too big when it came in. But....I have taken it someplace else to be altered and it's going to be fine. A lot of salons give you a larger size so they can bang you for alterations. If you're unsure with the measurements, look at the dress designer's sizing chart and compare it with your measurements. They have to order the dress according to your largest measurement. So if your bust is large and everything else is small you're going to wind up with a large dress to accommodate for this.

I wear a 10, and I ordered a 14. They just need to take in the top a little bit.

I normally fluctuate between a 5/6 and a 7/8. My gown is a size 12 and it's not that big on me. I thought it was going to be falling off but it's definitely not. They will need to shorten the length of the gown and take in the sides just a bit but otherwise it fits like a glove....

Is that a good thing or a bad thing???...LOL

This is true, with one exception. If you are ording a dress with a full ballgown-ish shirt the size of you hips doesn't really matter as much.

I am usually a 2/4 and they ordered me a 6. I have heard that bridal gowns fit small, but mine is huge and will need loads of alterations

I'm normally a 4 or a 6 and I ordered my dress in an 8 - it needs to be shortened and the bust needs to be taken in - but otherwise it's perfect! I can't gain an ounce!

Sorry - not telling you my size or my dress size, but they were the same. I Ordered my gown from an ebay vendor and her measurements were real-world measurements.

Re: Bridal Gown sizes

The sizing is definitely way off. I just got a BM dress for a wedding and I'm glad I ordered it big enough b/c there was not much room even though it was a bigger size than I usually take.

I work in a Bridal Salon, and people seem to always ASSUME that we want to kill them with alteration charges , and thats why we order larger sizes...so untrue, we would like to do away with alterations all together. The problem with sizing is as Halfpintny said, we have to go with your largest measurement, and even if your only a half inch larger in one spot, it's just safer to go with the larger size. You know how when you shop for jeans or something a size 12 can fit great, and you can go get another exact pair from the shelf and they can be too snug or too big? The same happenes with bridal Gowns, because of how they are cut. So for safety reasons we rocommend sticking with the size in the size charts, you can always ask to look at the chart yourself, and if you want you can sign responsibility and take the smaller size(it does work out sometimes) but believe me when I tell you, you will be MUCH happier if the dress is a little big as compared to a little small) I will say the toughest situation is the 18 and up dresses, each size generally jumps 4 inches, so even if the 20 is just a little too bit snug, you need to get the 22, with will be huge, it's just the nature of the beast, The dressmakers downfall though, not because we want to do all those alterations. For us..the less alterations the better!

Re: Bridal Gown sizes

I have to agree about the alterations.

I am normally a 10, my dress was an 18. I asked about that but because of my chest, the 18 is what size I needed to alter. AND there is a $200 cap on my alterations, so they would actually make out on the deal if they didnt' have to do a lot of work, but they will most likely have to.

I agree the sizing is cut small I am an 8 and I had to order a 14. Yes they taking the hem up and taking it in a little, but that's all included in the price. That's why when I bought the dress I made sure they did all alterations with no extra charge. I didn't want to go smaller as I may not lose weight and there is already too much pressure from planning.

In short,

You should have no worries about the size. Plus who is going to know other than you?
