Bridal gowns

Bridal gowns

Okay ladies... this newbe has a lot of questions.

The other day I went to David's Bridal and tried on dresses for the first time in my life. The first one was eh (it was lacey and poofy in my opinion)... the second one... let's just say the whole fitting room stopped and stared at me, and told me I looked absolutely beautiful. I'm usually the type that never thinks she looks great... but I even have to say 'WOW'. It was a halter neckline with A-line waiste, satin with sown on beaded embroydery. I almost called my fiance and told him to get over to the store with an officiant and let's just do the wedding now... with no make up on even, that's how amazed I was at how 'princess-like' I could look. The gown was a surprising $600! I was budgeting for about $2000 so you could imagine how happy I was thinking that I could put another almost $1500 into some other part of the wedding.

This afternoon I went to Bridal Reflections in Carle Place too. My best friend got her dress there for her 5/2000 wedding. I got to see some of the differences between the 2 stores. These dresses had Swarsky (sp) crystal on them (gorgeous of course), but the lady I spoke to threw me into the catagory of 'ROMANTIC' (I consider myself more of the sophisticated, elegant type) and showed me all these lacey, ivory things that I could not see on me. I was open to making an appointment to try them on, she reffered me to their Massapequa store b/c she said they had some less expensive dresses there (I'm sorry, and God bless those who would, but I just can't spend $5000 on a dress I'll only wear once, but those sales people... they are trained VERY well telling me how it's the dress I'll remember my whole life, blah, blah, blah. I will remember living in my starter home for 15 years as opposed to 7 b/c of my one time wear wedding dress more!). First off, does anyone know if expensive detailing (like crystals) will even show up in photos? I know you base the cost of your dress on your budget, but what is really reasonable and what is over the top? Also, are strapless dresses the trend? I saw my petite frame in more of a halter neckline with an A-line waiste! I think that I'd look like a sack of potatoes in a strapless! I'm 5'2 and 110 lbs and a 34C bra (seriously my boobs would look like the potatoes and the rest of me - a sack). I was a gymnast as a kid and have muscular shoulders, the halter seems to flatter them. Bridal Reflections lady also suggested I get a wider bottom (skirt?) to take the attention away from my arms... I hate my 'excellent child bearing' hips enough and at my height wouldn't that 'shrink' me? I thought the whole idea was to make a petite gal look taller and slimmer????? Not shorter and fatter such as a strapless with a wide-load hip design??? I'm done ranting

Thoughts? Comments?? Suggestions???

I think strapless A-line has been the trend because it is flattering on many body types. But you should choose the style that most suits you, and it seems like you love the halter. I would suggest that you keep looking, just because dress shopping was so much fun! When you try on the dress of your dreams you will know it. Good luck and have fun!

Have you gone to Macys...Bridal Salon? They are located inside the Smithhaven Mall, and in Manhasset. Thats where I got mine. They have a huge selection with reasonable prices.

I, also, found a great dress at Davids Bridal on my first day looking. I was sceptical that I could have found 'my' dress so easily, and at a price that was a fraction of what I would have spent at other places. I also kept looking bc I couldnt believe that such a perfect dress so soon, especially after reading some of the DB reviews on here. I think that if you feel spectacular in a certain style, dont let anyone talk you into anything else!!

Re: Bridal gowns

I went with a strapless because it was most flattering on me.......so if a halter is most flattering on you - go for it!!!
dont' worry about the cost of the dress...worry about what makes you feel like a bride....and that's what you base your decision on.
as far as a budget for dresses - i wanted to spend about $25-- on mine, and with alterations, i wound up at about $2600, so i was pretty close....but i was lucky to find a dress in my random price range......if you find one lower - go for it!!!
good luck!

I went with strapless b/c I loved the way they the dress looked on me and I liked the style... No matter what the 'trend' is you need to get a dress that you feel comfortable in and like on...

Re: Bridal gowns

go for the halter- if you have good shoulder and anice chest it works great- go with what made you feel great - as for david's just buy it there and find a seamstress some place else becasuse that is where a lot of people had trouble

Hey there! Got your mail, by the way. That dress sounds familiar. I agree with everyone. Go with your instincts on the dress, but keep looking. I could not count how many times I thought I found 'The ONE'. I said it before, I'll say it again. This I know will be one of the most difficult decisions I have to make.

Personally, I tried on the poofy one too. The sales girl even admitted that women with our frame and height 'get lost' in them. A-lines are best I feel. Also, don't forget. This is not like buying a dress in the store for a reg party. This dress will be custom tailored to you. Try on the strapless if you like the style. You won't look like a sack of potatoes. But you have to like it
