Bridal Party Etiquette

Bridal Party Etiquette

My FH is most likely including my brother and brother-in-law in the wedding party. Do you think I need to also include his sister? I have so many friends I'd like to include...and am scaling back on that...so I'd rather not include someone I am not very close with. But my instincts tell me it's probably not right. What do you think?

i would say yes, being that he is including your brother and brother-in-law, i would include his sister

It is proper etiquette to include your FH's siblings in your wedding party. Personally, I think it should depend on the situation though. I would talk about it with FH first and see his opinion on the matter, especially since he is including your siblings. If not in your bridal party, I think she should still be included in your wedding in some special way. (Unless she is completely horrible to you, but that doesn't seem to be the case.)

well...i didnt want to go into too much detail b/c i've already vented about his dad...and didnt want everyone to think i am insane and hate the whole family. but to be honest...the only one that is really nice is his mother. she recently told me that her daughter doesnt like me...but said she believes it's because she is jealous of the life my FH and I have...so she judges everything...same with the Dad. So to be honest...I dont really want to include someone that doesnt really like me. I'm not trying to be selfish...but I feel like this is my day...and I only want the important people to be included...especially when dress shopping, bachelorette party etc time comes around. But you are right...I need to really see how he feels. He knows I am not thrilled about the idea...so told me whatever i decide is fine with him...but i didnt probe too much to make sure he's 100% ok with it.

I think it depends on the siblings. FH's brother and sister are both in there late thirties, so we can just incorporating their children. They have no desire to be in a bridal party at 38. I would talk it over with your FH and even his sister.

I am in the same position. You have to include her.

*EDIT if you don't like her and that feeling is mutual then don't include her. She won't be offended if she really doesn't like you.

my sister in law didnt include me in her bridal party and my feelings were hurt. To make it worse, I wasnt included in anything that had to do with the wedding. When everyone was getting announced into the RH, I was sitting in my chair. To top it off, her aunt, was even announced when she walked in.

The worst part of the whole day were the constant questions from everyone at the wedding so my standard response was, 'dont know you'd have to ask nancy'

IMO i would choose who you want to be in your BP. For instance, I am not picking FH's brother's fiancee as one of my BM's (even though they will be married by the time FH and I will be). This is just because i do not feel very close to her, so i decided to stick with my original small bridal party of my sister as my MOH and my cousin and FH's cousin who i am close w/ as my BM's.

Does FH want his sister in the bridal party? i wanted both my brothers in it so i told that to FH. FH has a girl that he's very close with that he wanted in the wedding so i put her in. It's FH's sister...see what he wants to do

Re: Bridal Party Etiquette

i think you should invite her. the only exception would be if he wasnt asking your brothers, or if he had 10 sisters and they would overtake your BP. if it's just one, i think you should ask

I'm working from home today...and he just got hom early...so I asked him again. he said he really doesnt care one way or the other...since she doesnt like me anyway. LOL. I'm thankful he is putting my brother in. But he also has a very different relationship with my family. We are all very close...and his family isnt.

Have you spoke to your FH about this? What are his feelings on including her?

I would say it is good etiquette to include her- especially if he's having your brother and brotherinlaw.

Also, it may help bring the two you closer- you never know!

He said he really doesnt care. He's closer to my family than I am to his...which is why he wants to include my brother. I'll be honest, including her likely wont make us any closer. We have zero in common. And I sort of feel like the financial burden will only make things worse. But we;ll see. I have two yrs to decide : ) Thanks to everyone for opinions!!!

if you keep her out of the BP you may cause more hurt feelings and problems than you have now...Just think of consequences...

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I know the 'right' thing to do would be to include her. But I'm still not sold. She doesnt like me...so it would just be awkward. I'll see how things go before I make my final decision

Re: Bridal Party Etiquette

it really depends on your family. in my family we have a basic unwritten rule that people who are married & have children are not to be included in the bridal party. i have a similar situation where it would be my brother & SIL & their 3 kids. FH has no problem including my brother because they get along very well. however when we asked my mom what we should do, she said just include the three kids. i think in your situation the best thing to do would be to talk to FMIL and ask her opinion on the situation. also wait until the last possible minute to ask everyone, so no one feels like an extra.
