Is it awful if my matron of honor wear a long dress and the rest of the girls wear cocktail length dresses - same color and material?

no, it should be fine. She is your maid of honor, she is supposed to be a bit different.

I was actually going to do this but I spoke with my MOH and she prefered tea length too so I put her in tea length same color just a different dress but you definitely can do that
