How did you set up the dining and entertainment? Was your band/dj in the same room as the dining area?
If they were separate, was music pumped into the room that the band/dj wasn't in?

Cluelessbride,
I have researched this a bit b/c I am looking at clubs in NYC with a lot of different rooms. Before I start rambling, what is your venue set up like and are you having a wandering buffet or a sit down dinner with dancing in another room?
I have heard of a sit down dinner with a STRING QUARTET and then a band/dj in another room which sounds really nice.
The wedding I went to with separate rooms in Philly only used the band under a tent. But it would have been better if they piped some music in now that you mention it b/c people went back in the house for dessert and there was no music. You could faintly hear the band so you couldn't have had a jazz group or anything though.
The Oheka brides sound like they have dinner and dancing in one room and then sometimes dessert in another (but I don't know if they have any music in that room or you can kind of hear the band - good point) and then jazz in the library at the end.

I went to a wedding where the DJ was in a room different from the reception.. and IMO it was not as good as when the entertainment is in the same room. People didn' t dance as much, you couldn't really hear the DJ AND I think the DJ/Band brings a certain atmosphere and in order to get that you need them to be in the room.

My place has 2 big rooms, one on the left and one on the right, separated by an entranceway and a 'parlor'.
I'd like to have the band in the left side room (which is the nicer of the two) as well as the dining tables, and then pipe in music to the other room. But then why would anyone use the other room?
Maybe if I keep the BAR in the other room, that will get people in there

if you can fit all of your dining tables and band w. room to dance in one room, why not put your cocktail hour food with cocktail tables and the bar in the other room- that's what I did.
1 room for cocktail hour- bar- food displays w. tables
1 room for dining/dancing.

I had a pianist for the cocktail hour, but the ballroom wasn't open yet.
Once the ballroom opened and the pianist left, I had a DJ/MC in there along with a setup (no DJ) in one of the other sitting rooms (we had 4 rooms, plus outdoors). The setup played classical music at a lower volume through out the night.

We're going to have the band and dining in one room. Oheka has a new ballroom, which is much larger and can accomodate.
