I may have myself a problem. We went bridesmaid dress shopping this afternoon and 4 of my 6 girls attended. Of the 4 girls, 2 are very skinny, like size 2, one is medium size 8, and the other one is larger.
So the 3 girls tried dresses on and we think we found one they like. The 4th girl couldn't try one dress on. All of the samples were a size 10 and I felt absolutely terrible about it. I talked to a few folks and they mentioned that the manufacturers only sell the samples in a specific size usually 10 is avg. I think this is terrible and I don't know if my other BM is upset right now. I have tried to call and haven't received a call back. Has anyone else had this happen????

Re: Bridesmaid Dress Size
one of my girls was larger than the 'sample size' but i don't know-- if it were me, if it really bothered me that much i would lose the weight. i have been a size 10 before and i'm now (and have been for about 2.5 years) a size 6. that is where i am happiest and during the somewhat brief time where i was a little heavier i really had no one to blame but myself. it's very nice of you to feel bad for your friend b/c that shows you care but at the same time: if it meant that much to her, she will lose whatever weight she feels she needs to lose-- whatever it takes to make her feel good about herself. if not, then she is happy being a size 12 (or whatever she happens to be) which is fine also... there's nothing wrong with that size. i think my point is just that everyone needs to be happy with who they are and if you are not happy: do what i do, what everyone does and DO something about it.
good luck, don't worry-- if she can't try it on now, they will measure her, wait for her size to come in and she can try it on then. and don't feel bad-- you didn't do anything wrong and you seem like a very caring and supportive friend.

Re: Bridesmaid Dress Size
Its just hard though, because I know that my MOH is on the heavier side and couldn't fit into the samples.... so she couldn't really get the idea of whether or not she'd like how certain dresses looked on her.
Obviously she's not thrilled with her weight, but it is what it is... and it made it hard for us to decide on a dress.
Also, it doesn't help that the places told us that if we ordered the dress in her size we were obligated to buy it.

Re: Bridesmaid Dress Size
yes - i went BM dress shopping fo rmy friends wedding a few weeks ago - her FSIL is like a size 18 and nothing would fit her at all. she was really happy when we went to Davids bridal and they had a wide range of sizes and she could finally try some on - thats where we ended up getting them

Re: Bridesmaid Dress Size
This has happened with my bridal party. One of my BM is an 18 maybe 20 & I can tell that she was upset that none of the stores we went to carried her size (except for david's) I just think that if a designer makes the dress in a range of 2- 24, that stores should carry more of a variety of sizes than a size 10. We are going to RK bridal in a few weeks & they carry plus size dress so we'll see....

Re: Bridesmaid Dress Size
i have 10 girls in my wedding party from sizes 4 to 20. we went to davids bridal. we all found a dress everyones loves. and for 10girls to agree that was amazing. everyone felt comfortable and they had every size to choose from. maybe try going there. i am a plus size women and i know the feeling when being ina wedding and not being able to see what the dress looks like on me it stinks. these companies should realise that not everyone is a 10.
i am sure no matter what you pick as the bm dreses your friend going to look beautiful.

Re: Bridesmaid Dress Size
the sampe four our dresses was a 12- and it fit all of them. One of my bms had to get a bigger size and she was upset about it-- but- i really think most dresses in the bridal world run small. I know i had to get a bigger size for my dress!

Re: Bridesmaid Dress Size
Keep in mind that even the samples that say they are a size 10 are actually more like size 8s or 6s. I wear a true size 10. I tried on my wedding dress in the sample size 10 and it was snug. I had to order it in a size 14. Having been as large as a true size 24 and as small as a true size 8, I knew that I was NOT a 14 but regardless, ordered the 14 anyway. It is always better to take a dress in than to let it out. Sizes in 'wedding land' are not comparable to regular street clothing sizes.
ETA: My BMs ranged in size from 'less than' zero to a size 16. The smaller girls were petite teenagers and ordered the smallest size to have taken in. ALL of the other ladies, who were adults ordered dresses 2 sizes bigger than they wore in street clothes. So I had size 8s ordering 12s. They knew that bridal sizes ran small.

Re: Bridesmaid Dress Size
This happened to my bridal party too. When we went shopping my one BM who is a size 14 could not try on that many dresses - she put them on as best she could and came out in them anyway (most were half zipped or not at all) What a trooper!! It turned out that they actually had a sample of the EXACT dress I wanted to order and guess what? It was a size 14! I had her try it on first just to make sure - it fit her like a glove and it looks FABULOUS on her!! I was so excited!!! So don't worry - once she gets her size it will be just fine!!

If you really want her to try on dresses, try david's they do have just about every size available. not usually in the right color, but available.

Re: Bridesmaid Dress Size
My BMs went from size 2-26. They chose the dress by looks, no one tried on anything because they are all OOT. They all picked the same dress and were happy. Hope this helps.

Re: Bridesmaid Dress Size
that def happened to one of my BM's too. in dress sizes one is super skinny like a 0, another is like a perfect 8-10, and the third is around a 14-16. when we went the two were able to try one fine and the larger one tried on 1 dress and was absolutely miserable the whole time. i felt soo bad. in the end she said she didnt care what the dresses looked like as long as i was happy but still i felt aweful. my mom is a plus size too and she tried on a gorgeous dress that was a 10 so the back was like not even remotely zipperable on her although she did love the dress..
