Bridesmaids

Bridesmaids

I'm planning on waiting until our engagement party at the end of March to give my girls (who basically know they're my BMs anyway lol) a box/card/something to ask them officially.

BUT once I do that I know I'll immediately be bombarded with questions about dresses, etc.

Did anyone offer to let their BMs pick their dresses?

I'm thinking of explaining our color palette and letting them run with it.

One girl is tall and, as she describes it, 'has hips that just don't lie'; another girl is 4'9' and curvy; my last girl is tall but fluctuates.

I want them to feel and look their best so it doesn't really matter if they match or not -- but how did you all handle this?

I picked the designer and the fabric and they get to choose which dress they like better. The designer I picked has about 30 dresses in the same fabric so I'm hoping they don't have a problem finding one they like. I was trying to go for a certain shade of purple so I wanted to make sure my girls have the same shade which is hard to do if they choose different designers or a different fabric

We don't have one 'theme' color, we have a few, but I think my girls will end up wearing navy -- because it's the closest thing to black and that's all they ever wear. OY! Maybe I'll be surprised by what they're up for when we actually have this convo but they're so opinionated it'll be interesting...

I picked the designer and the color, and let the BMs free in the salon... to my surprise, all three BMs ended up liking the same dress.

i had all my girls in the same dress and they were all different shapes and sizes - i brought my two MOHs with me to pick out the dress - i already had the color in mind

this is what they looked like. i don't know how many girls you have, but ive been in BPs where i have to pick my own dress and honestly, i hated it. you inevitably have one girl in the BP 'take charge' and i was forced to buy a $250 dress because the one i picked originally was already 'picked' by someone else

anyway, long story short, big groups do better with more direction IMO and in my experience.

girl on the far left is 90 lbs and 4'10' - girl on far right is 300 lbs and 5'7'

Originally picked one dress I thought everyone would look good in since they are 1/100th my size haha, but turned out the dress was not flattering on everyone..

At the shop, plan B quickly came into play and said everyone had to have same designer/fabric/color but could pick the dress they wanted. I wanted everyone happy. Hopefully everyone was ok. Got 4 dresses so far, with repeats of a dress, and 2 more OOT girls to still choose their dress.

Here's a picture, very poor lighting and picture in store, a big mess of colors and styles but hope it will look OK.
The color I picked was the second from the left, blush. I'm happy and hopefully the girls are too.

I guess this is kind of my inspiration, and why I was ok with the girls picking different dresses. I don't mind things not looking uniform. Just no one picked a long dress thus far.

This is what happened to me - I never thought they would all agree on and look good in the same dress, so I told them the designer, color and fabric, and they all picked and looked great in the same dress

I'll only have 3 girls, but they're all incredibly fashion-savvy; one is a buyer for Macy's and the other is a buyer for ridiculous high-end fashion The third is just extremely picky and would probably rather I tell her to just pick a Betsey Johnson dress and wear that.

I know they won't all be comfortable in a color I would choose because I truly do mean what I said - they don't wear colors. All 3 stay in the black, grey and brown families, so me asking them to wear sherbert colored dresses to fit my vintage palette won't work.

Since I don't have one color in mind, I'm not really helpful to them. Also, NONE of my girls will have any problem taking charge in the least.

I love these! I would probably wear any and all of these myself Maybe I can find something like this, where a series of different dresses by the one designer would work, but if I used these, for example, none of my girls would wear them

They all hate tea-length dresses, they don't wear dresses as short as the mini one because they're body conscious, and the long dresses would only drape well on one of the girls...wahhh!

Re: Bridesmaids

frankly, i've been in many weddings and my opinion never seemed to matter much in the final say of the dress...so I guess in light of that i'm just letting my MOH, my sister, make the final decision. i have a HUGE party, 10 girls including my sister. so while i wish i could make everyone happy, i know i can't...i'm the one who has to be happy in the end...so focus on what YOU want...its awfully nice of you to try to take everyones opinions into consideration, but if you WANT sherbert colors, if thats YOUR vision...i say go with it. your friends will understand because they care about your happiness. and when its your turn to be there for them, and they want you to wear something colorless, you'll happily agree lol :)

lol i wish it would be this easy! we'll see what happens after we actually start discussing it as a group - not going to stress too much now.

Yeah, don't stress. Girls know the deal when it comes to picking, you're the boss.

I put my foot down with color, one tried to change it to blue and another purple (last dress on the right) because my reception is at a vineyard, but I really didn't like it at all. They were fine with it in the end. My junior bridesmaids picked the 2 on the left and the MOH picked the strapless, and bridesmaids picked the same far right coincidentally.
A bit of a compromise but it all worked out!

I think compromise is going to be the magic word for us haha

Re: Bridesmaids

my sister keeps allowing herself to be swayed by other people about the bm dress...i might have to just take charge and say 'this one'...they ARE getting short dresses, so I think that's a pretty decent compromise!

I was all for my girls getting whatever dress they felt amazing in- just as long as they were all in the one same color. My girls were all a variety of different sizes, but the BMs all wanted the same dress, so it worked out. I had my 2 MOHs in different dresses. I was going to put the MOHs in a different color if the BMs all choose a different dress, but it ended up all working out in the end. I say as long as their in the color you want, then let them choose a dress in which they feel beautiful in.

I'm looking into that dress that you can tie in several different ways and letting the girls tie them however they want. I only have 3 girls but they are all built differently, so I thought something like that could work. We'll see when we go try them on! If that doesn't work then I'm picking one designer, color, and fabric, and letting them pick what they are comfy in.

I love vintage palletes, in fact I'm incorporating a lot vintage touches with my wedding. What about asking the girls to wear a shade of grey. If your colors are soft and vintage, at least thats what I'm thinking, I think their bouquets will really pop against a gray background.

That's exactly what I'm thinking - I'll suggest either shades of grey for them, or the option to wear grey and navy blue, because both will fit in with our palettes. I really just want everyone to enjoy how they look because of all the weddings I've been in, I can only stand to look back at pics from 1
