broken gift comes in mail -- what do you do?

Original post by mka06

I was incredibly excited to get home at the end of last week and find an engagement gift from my high school buddy and his wife waiting for me at the doorstep. I open it... and it's Waterford toasting flutes. Very pretty and a very generous gift! I'm thrilled. But, one is broken. The base is completely separated from the stem and in a billion pieces (read not fixable), even though the rest is intact.

Now -- they put some bubble wrap in the box, but not a lot... and it didn't say fragile on the box. I don't know if they insured it, but I don't necessarily think so bc I didn't have to sign for it and I am under the impression that you have to sign for an insured package. Who knows whether they could or would return it?

Do I tell them it was broken? I think I would want to know... but I certainly don't want them to think that they need to replace the gift if it wasn't insured... so I am willing to just say TY and leave it at that. But, then I started to worry that they would wonder why we didn't use them at the wedding or why they don't see them in our china closet when they come to visit. What would you do -- tell or not tell? TIA!

You should tell them. I'm sure they will understand.

Did she ship it or did it come straight froma store? This happenned witha crystal decanter set I got form my aunt. I called the company and they replaced it. Generally I think if you order something roma store, you don't have to insure it, it is expected that you will get it intact. try calling the company first

I would tell them, call her to thank her, and ask her where she bought them because one happened to break during the shipping and you love them so much you want to exchange it for a new one.
It's better to be honest about it-like you said, they might wonder why you didn't use them at the wedding.

I would let them know, Im sure they wouldnt want to pay for something that got damaged and that you cant use.

I know if I sent a gift and it was broken that I would want the person to let me know!

oops I didnt read the whole thing- if you think your friends mailed it themselves, then no I wouldnt say anything only because I wouldnt want them to think they have to buy another one. If they do ask you about it then you can tell them.

If the store sent it - then Id definitely tell them so the store can replace it for you.

I agree with this too!

It happened to me, my aunt's friend sent me a gift and it came broken. I called, thanked her graciously, and told her it had come broken. I also told her that while I appreciated the gift, it was not necessary to replace the menorah. It was butt-ugly anyway.
