Brooke Sheilds discusses her experience w/postpartum depression on Oprah today

Oprah comes on at 9am here in Chicago and it was a very interesting show. Brooke Shields talks about miscarriages, IVF and mostly postpartum. She spoke very candidly about the feelings she had when she bought the baby home.

For some reason this is not something people talk about. It was a good show to help new moms and mommies-to-be recognize and understand it's nothing to be shameful of.

I actually have an article on her experience that I took from the daily news. I have to read it though.

I have read exceprts from her book ( I think it was in Good Housekeeping magazine) and it is very honest and a hard read, YET I think its a valuable service she is providing to come out and SPEAK about this and make women less afraid of seeking help if they find themselves in this position, post-birth.

I have to say I truly commend her for being so outspoken about this subject and so honest in what she went through - she went through a terrible journey with her postpartum depression and she gets into her deepest thoughts and feelings about what was happening to her.

Even though I'm not a mommy yet, I believe this is a very important subject for ALL of us to learn about. In the excerpts I read, her description of what she went through and how she overcame her depression will give women hope that they are NOT alone...

I think that realizing you are not crazy to be experiencing this is an important message to get out there, so that women do not have to suffer in silence and can be helped

All I have to say is Postpartum *****...I had a mild case of it after I had my son, it only lasted a week or so but I felt like a horrible person. I was so afraid to take my baby home and in fear of not knowing what to do! The feelings were so overwhelming, there were times I didn't even want to hold my child and I would just cry wondering 'what is wrong with me'? Thank god my mother was around to help me through my tough time and there for my son as well!

I watched it yesterday. Even though I am not 'officially' TTC yet I am in the 'information gathering' stage and I found the whole program very informative (as well as emotionally hard to listen to at times). She talked about her MC and the experience of giving birth, which had to be one of the worst stories I have ever heard- I can't believe she wants to have another baby after what she went through just giving birth to the first baby!

I saw her on the Today show today. She'll be on again tomorrow along with a medical expert. I think its great that she is putting her story out there. It is so helpful for new mothers. I'm curious in learning more so I can recognize the signs if it happens to me.

I am very glad that she is coming out publically because I had such shame and to this day very few people truly understand some of the emotions. I am thankful that I was easily able to bond with Molly and care for her but some of the other feelings...flashbacks, feeling of total dread and despear were awful and your heart aches for them to go away. I think she will help a lot of women.
