We're shopping for cribs now and we aren't sure whether to get a small dresser or a changing table. The baby's room isn't that big so we can utilize the closet instead of a dresser. What do you think? Do you use your changing table? I know some people say they don't. Not sure what to get (changing table or dresser).

Re: BTDT moms:
The furniture we're ordering comes with a dresser that we will use as a changing table. We don't see the need for spending extra money on a changing table, plus our pack & play comes with a changing station in it.

Re: BTDT moms:
Emmas dresser has a place for the changing pad so we didnt need the changing table. To me I think they are a HUGE waste of $$

Re: BTDT moms:
I originally ordered a 4 drawer dresser, w/changing area on top; they made a 5 drawer dresser by mistake, which obviously turned out to be too high, so he threw in a changing table for free. I love it. Its the perfect height to change the baby without breaking my back (which is bad to begin with). well worth it in my opinion.

Re: BTDT moms:
We bought the 6 drawer double dresser which is where I change the baby. It works out very nicely. When I was reading up on furniture, the recommendation was against a changing table. they said that the $$ you spend may not be worth it when you consider that once the baby starts getting very wiggly, you're going to want to change him/her on the floor where there's less of a risk of getting hurt.
Did you get the baby bargains book yet? If not, its well worth the $10 on buy.com!!

We use the top of his dresser as the changing table. In the beginning we also used the one that came with the pack & play when we were downstairs...I figure you get more use in the long term by not having a separate changing table.

We also used the top of his double dresser. They sell the pads separately and we screwed the one side (it has a mesh strip for that purpose) into the back of the dresser and I used sticky tape with velcro to keep the front in place. It never moved at all and I was able to change the cover easily. Once he was too wiggly to change on top we removed it.

Re: BTDT moms:
I got a two drawer dresser w. little cubbies from pottery barn kids. It has a changing table top that is removeable - we took it off - I am too short to use it comfortably.
I am changing her on the contour pad on the bed and it's totally fine and easy

Re: BTDT moms:
We just used the top of a dresser. And, here's a hint that will save you from having to screw the pad into the furniture, or use sticky tapes....USE the skid-free drawer liners from the dollar store! We just placed a big piece of it under the foam pad, and it literally NEVER moves - no matter how much the kid wiggles. It's great, and it saves you from having to put holes or tapes on the furniture.

Re: BTDT moms:
I also have the dresser with the changing pad on top that converts later to a shelf, I used it all the time with my first but honestly with the second child she gets changed everywhere and anywhere, bed, floor, table, whatever works. I don't think a separate changing table is worth the $$ especially when you are short on space

Re: BTDT moms:
I do not have a dresser with the changing table on top since I refinished my dresser from when I was a baby. If I got new furniture I would definitely have invested in that piece. I bought a cheap (but sturdy) changing table since I wanted a place to change the baby and keep her changing items. I must say that I have gotten my use out of it. She is 13 months old and I still use it for every diaper change. She wiggles alot but I find she has no where to go on the table. When I use the floor at a friends house she has a much easier escape route and behaves worse. I think there is a 20lb limit on a freestanding changing table, but a dresser is much sturdier and should be strong enough for many years.

Re: BTDT moms:
I just used the top of the dresser.. it worked well.. and it was a good height.. if I thought there would have been a problem I probably would have got the changing table! (I am 5'11''!)

I'm 5'9 so I may just use the top of the dresser also.

Re: BTDT moms:
IMO, I think the changing tables are a waste and I don't like having all the clothes and stuff showing (what if you make a mess? ). We use a pad on top of the dresser and Gianna LOVES being on it!!!!

Re: BTDT moms:
We went to a friend's house yesterday and I looked at their nursery room which is about the same size as the nursery room we are going to set up. We now know what we want to do and how much we can fit without having the room too cluttered. We are going to have a crib and a dresser. We can always use the top of the dresser as a changing table if we want to.
