I have a changing pad on a 6 drawer dresser- about waist high. I love it, couldn't see spending the extra money on a changing table... and I actually use the changing pad feature on my pack and play the most.
I have the combo changing table and I honestly rarely use it. Especially as Gabriella gets older, it's easier to change her on the floor or my bed. Just IMHO, I personally wouldn't worry about it.
I have a dresser with a top that is a changing table. I NEVER used it once. I hated changing Molly sideways like that. I really like changing her on our bed with a pad underneath her. So honestly getting that changing pad and the 2 covers was a big waste of money for us.
I have the dresser/changing table combo, and I also never use it. Like Michele said, it is really hard to change the baby sideways. I change him in the changing table part of the pack-and-play that we got - it is in the living room, and much more convenient.

We use the pack n play most of the time too.
