BTDT Moms - if you have dogs...

Did it take awhile for them to adjust to the baby?? I have a VERY spoiled 1yr old Rottie who is the best with children, but hasn't really been around babies. I think she'll be fine, but DH thinks she'll be jealous....any suggestions?

Cosmo definitely gets jealous and he still gets a ton of attention!!! If we are laying on the floor playing with her he has to be right there.

As much as I love my dog and know he wouldn't do anything to hurt the baby I still don't leave them alone together. He is very curious about her and is always in her face sniffing and licking.

We brought home the blanket she was wrapped it and while we were preparing for her arrival we let him smell everything so we think it helped.

Thanks! I've heard about the blanket so we'll do that - I've also heard it's very important that I give her lots of TLC when I get home from the hospital and to introduce them right away. I wouldn't leave them alone either - not for fear of her biting, but she's very hands on - she loves to put her paws on us and climb on our laps, and she can't do that with a baby!!

That's what we did with Zoe. When i gave birth, My husband inmediately brought a blanket from the hospital so that Zoe could smell my daughter's scent and get used to her.
It's amazing how loving and protective Zoe is over my daughter. Now that she seven months old, they interact more but I do have to keep on eye on Zoe because she is also very playful and affectionate. It's great though because I see how they are going to have such a great relationship.

So glad to see this post -- I have had my Black Lab (90 lbs) for 10 years and he has been my only baby. I was worried about him being jealous, and he is very playful too. Good idea about the blanket!!

i have a 10 month old american staffordshire bull terrier, and we are using a baby doll now so he gets used to seeing us holding something i talk to the doll. it cries so he can get used to the noise. we are going to do the banket also. i hope it all works!

Another thing to do is have DH carry the baby into the house when you come home....you need to walk in first and greet the dog and give him affection. The dog hasn't seen you in a few days and will have missed you so its important to show them affection at this point.

We placed the carseat w/ baby in front of Cosmo and let him smell her - he did it and walked away and has been fine since.

We brought the blankets home too and Angel slept on it that first night. It's not so much jealousy but moreso they want to 'play' with the baby. They get a little rough so I have to be extra-extra careful. The baby is forever getting into their 'stuff' and that's becoming more of a problem than anything. The cat always is curious but from a safe distance (lost too many handfuls of hair )

We all did the blankets from the hospital. I went in the house first alone and greeted her and I took for a quick walk, just to get the 'edge' off of her, because she was SUPER excited to see me. Then we brought in Andrew in his carseat we put it on the floor and we let her smell him. They've been best buddies ever since!!!
Here's a picture of Andrew and Lola. Andrew can do anything to her and she'll either let him do or get up and walk away. When, Lola was a puppy I conditioned to ear pulling, tail pulling and hands in her bowl while is eating. Sometimes I think she thinks Andrew is her baby is has always been extremely gentle with him. She is still spoiled rotten and we still give her lots of attention and toys!

my dogs love the baby, about a month before she was born I put baby magic lotion on this baby doll that looks like a real baby, the lamaze teacher said to do this and everyday I would walk down the stairs w/ the doll and let them both smell the feet then when we got home from the hospital they were used to me totting around a baby
