Re: btrflygrl!

Do they EVER calm down??? My 6 month old can be such a mush - she lays with us and cuddles all the time, but then there are times when she turns into a crazy woman!!! I don't know if that's just puppy syndrome or if she'll always be a nut What town do you guys live in?

Re: btrflygrl!

We used to live in Oakdale, but moved to Georgia a month ago.

She will calm down....at about 1 yr she calms down a bit, and around 2 they really mellow out. Bailey LOVES to cuddle with us whether it be on the couch or in the bed. She always jumps in the bed in the early morning before we wake up. She follows me from room to room, and if I stay in that room, she'll lay down. It's kind of annoying sometimes because she is always underfoot and in the way. She loves kids, loves her family and has gotten very good with strangers coming into her territory lately. She used to get defensive, but as of late, she thinks they are there to play with her. She gets bored easily and is a little on the obsessive compulsive side...she'll nibble at things till they are destroyed (like the fuzz off a tennis ball, stuffing out of a toy). So we limit her to rawhide and marrow bones. She's gotten better with that, as she found a tennis ball and would rather play with it than chew it now, UNLESS we are ignoring her or she isn't getting what she wants.

What else would you like to know???

Re: btrflygrl!

wow - what a beautiful Rottie you have! We're getting a Rottie pup very soon - the breeder is expectiing the litter on Sept 2 and DH and I are SO excited!!! I just saw your new avatar now - I'm always interested to hear what Rottie owners have to say. I just love these dogs so much, I can't wait till we have ours!

Don't you find it funny that everyone who hears that you have a Rottie is almost shocked when you say he/she is a big mush? :) I've been getting A LOT of this, esp. from family members... Everyone just thinks they're these crazy killing machines!! But we've been doing a lot of research and our breeder has been awesome w/ all our questions, so we know better than to fear these dogs! Thanks for your insight - I'm sure i'll be FMing youin the weeks to come with questions of my own!

Re: btrflygrl!

not a problem! I love dismissing the sterotypes people have of Rotties!! She truly is the love of our lives and I would be devastated should anything happen to her. Buy the book Rottweilers for Dummies...it was a BIG help to us and easy to read! But for one..you definitely want to crate them from the beginning! They CAN be destructive when bored...I've heard a few stories of rotties eating through walls!!!

OMG - I got that off eBay for $4.00 about two months ago! despite the title, it's been such a great book for us! DH and I read parts of it to each other every night.

and about the destructive factor - we are DEFINITLY crate training them :) Nothing surprizes me about Rotties and the lengths they'll go to when bored - My mom used to work in a law office where the judge owned a Rottie. His claim to fame was eating concrete and LAWN furniture when he felt 'ignored'! I can't wait to have one of our very own! My sister says I'm babying it already, but I just know that we'll never want to leave him alone and he's coming everywhere with us when possible! We're picking him up at the end of October - I just can't wait!!!

Re: btrflygrl!

I just wrote on a thread the other day how sad it is that rotties are so streotyped!! My girl is SUCH a mush and so friendly with children and other animals. We also crated her for the first 4 months then we slowly let her stay out more often. Now she goes in all by herself when she wants to sleep. I must admit that she did bite through a wall about a month ago - because we left her alone too long and I think she got mad at us! She too lives on rawhides which has saved us from her biting things she shouldn't. I'm happy to hear she'll mellow out a little as she gets older - I love her energy but won't be able to keep up with her much longer!!! Thanks for the advise and pics....here's one of my girl...

Your pup is ADORABLE!

We're getting ours from VonScosher Rottweilers - they're in MA, about a 3 hour drive from here. Scott is the breeder and he's just been so wonderful with us so far - even sent us a pregnancy calender once the dam was confirmed pregnant! We've been nothing but thrilled with everything so far, from the impresive pedigrees to all the awards their show dogs have won - I'd really recommend them! They actually breed with some of the dogs from Little Bears Farm out here in Centerreach - but they didn't have any pups available when we first started planning, so we went with VonSchosher. I don't mind the distance, even though I'm a little concerned about our puppy on a such a long drive home. But we're planning on making frequent pit stops, so I'm hoping it won't be a traumatic experience for him! So exciting - I can't imagine what waiting for a baby must be like!!!

how old will he be? We wrapped Bailey in a towel everywhere we took her while she was small. She would only sleep on our chests too for awhile!!

Re: btrflygrl!

so, as a rottie mom newbie I have a question for you ladies!

DH and I are adamant about taking our pup out to play once we get him, but we've really been shocked to find out how many of the Nassau Co. parks/beaches do not allow dogs, even leashed! We looked at a few parks this weekend that had dog runs, but it seems like such a waste of all that beautiful park land to confine dogs to one fenced in concrete run I'm sad bc my hometown in NJ had the most baeutiful park and I alwasy saw dogs running around freely there, but that's not the case out here on LI... Aside from the local walking and backyards, where do you all take your dogs for days outside? Thanks!!

We can pick him up once he's 7 weeks, so hopefully that weekend we'll be driving to MA!

Re: btrflygrl!

We had a HUGE yard for Bailey to play in! We would take her around the block on her leash and DH had a ballpark down the block, so if no one was there, we'd let her off the lash, but she never wanders more than 50 feet in front of us!

Now in the APt. we walk her to go potty, and they have an asphalt path to walk. Otherwise she runs around SIL yard when we go to visit. We play ball with her in the apt, but she seems fine with her extended walks.

Re: btrflygrl!

Condrie Hall in Huntington has a dog park. I haven't taken Asia there yet but I plan on it. Also, there is a restaurant in Hunt that allows pets...have to check that place out too... You're from Centereach, Helena??

Re: btrflygrl!

oh, I know where Coindre Hall is! we'll have to check that out - thanks!

I'm actually from East Meadow, but Centereach was just one of the more local breeders we found
