Bug rant

I move from Queens to LI and there are this many more bugs???? W T F ?? I hate hate hate hate them with a passion. I once caught my DH lying to me about killing a bug (it got away) so I wouldnt obsess all night. I cant even comprehend how he can sleep if he knows there's a bug in the house. And now...lots of bugs! And it's not like it's just me fending for myself, I have my child to protect too. I opened the door earlier and a moth or something flew in...I hope that's what I found on the wall in the bedroom a few minutes ago. It was really ugly and I had to sneak up on it - but I got it.

Anyone else with a major bug phobia? How does everyone survive?

I moved from Queens to LI and I CANT TAKE IT!! I'm out in Suffolk county in the WOODS and there are so many **** bugs!!!!!!!!! I am constntly covered in mosquito bites- i have to wear repellent IN THE HOUSE. One night I woke DH up b/c I was convinced we had roaches- there were 4 of these little black bugs in my kitchen, but they were beetles, that come in when we open the door to let the dogs out. UGH!

I'm with you! I moved from Long Beach, where I swear there were no bugs or mosquitos or spiders! We pay a fortune for an exterminator service and we still have all these bugs outside and inside. And there are spiderwebs all over the outside of the house! I called the service and they told me spiders are good! For whom?, I asked because they give me anxiety attacks!

I told DH we are moving back unless he does something! He wanted to live out here -- not me! He, of couse, thinks I'm nuts! He escorts the bugs outside!

Liz, I am LMAO - but, only b/c you sound JUST LIKE ME! I have TOTAL bug-a-phobia and it drives my DH crazy. And I am not kidding.

We are staying at my parents' house this weekend, b/c we just spent a boatload of money getting the house exterminated for silverfish (eeeewwww!)

That is how I choose to deal w/the bugs!

Re: Bug rant

Claud - we've noticed some occasional problems with silverfish too. Did you have to move out or just choose to because of Paul? I'd love to have the house treated - when we spoke to someone they never said anything about having to move out.

Another Queens to LI girl here although I do not have bug phobia I can't stand all these spiders and their webs!!!! I've only been seeing potato bugs and spiders and they drive me nuts. I also called an exterminator and he didn't even spray - saying I don't have enough bugs! LOL He said not to get rid of the spiders outside that they are good. Every morning I feel like we walk into a web. It is gross. I swear the first month I spent search the web for ways to get rid of spiders! I also am constantly bite up. I have bites all down my legs - yuck! So not use to these bug issues! All I say at least it isn't rodents!!!

Re: Bug rant

I am the worst with bugs. In my old apartment in Massapequa I was infested with centerpedes. They are huge and ugly and I'd be getting like 5 or more a night. I shiver just thinking about it. One night it was so bad I just sat there crying until the exterminator showed up. They are nasty.

I live in Farmingville now and we are pretty bug free except for the occasional ant. I am much more sanier now lol.

I knew I wasn't alone and I wanted to commisserate. I told DH we are calling the exterminator. He said OK but I still went on and on about it as if he was trying to convince me not to. LOL Meanwhile any family or friends who live on LI dont seem alarmed at the bugs I've seen. Indoors, the ants are really bothering me. I've seen about 10 since we've been here (1 week) but it's 10 too many for me. I cannot stand the idea of anything crawling around. Last night after I posted this, an ant went scurrying across the dresser mirror in our bedroom. I slept terribly last night because I was afraid one might crawl on Lukie.

Karen - I can totally see myself doing the same thing in your centipede situation! How horrid!!! Bugs have reduced me to tears many times.

Claud - Silverfish! Ugh!! I think I had those in my apt in the city a few years ago. I didnt even know what it was when I saw it so I looked it up on line till I found pictures of bugs so I could identify it. I swear one looked over its shoulder at me as it ran away. Thankfully, I only saw one or two ever. I don't blame you for fleeing to a safer place with the family in tow.

Re: Bug rant

I have to join in!! Last year both my basement and my FH's basement had camelback crickets!!! EW!!!! They are HUGE and when you spray them they jump AT YOU bc their vision is backwards so they think they are running away......I refused to go to his house bc his apartment was a basement apartment and they were everywhere! His grandpa found the nest in the boiler room (EWWWW there were hundreds!) and my dad found the nest right outside our basement window so they are gone now.......GROSS!!!!
I have had mosquitos in my room all summer and they are the HUGE ones! Like mutant mosquitos!!! I can't take it!
I feel like a prisoner to bugs!
SOOOOO glad to see I'm not crazy! (FH thinks I am!)

Re: Bug rant

Usually just ICKY bugs gross me out (waterbugs, roaches, etc.) BUt for the most part, John is the BUGphobia one of the bunch (I swear, I think every couple has 'one' amongst them!! )
I might see a spider and go 'oh how cute look at that little spider, remember Charlotte's Web?' and Johns like 'A SPIDER ??? WHERE ??? ' and Im like 'oh leave him, he's so cute, he's one of Gods creatures, dont kill him !!! '
They really have to be gross to freak me out. Flies and bees annoy me, but I cant understand that paranoia John gets when he sees a bee or gets bit by a mosquito
But now I see he's in better company than me !

Re: Bug rant

When we first moved into our house, we thought we had invaded spider central. Neither of us is terrified of bugs, but neither of us is madly in love with them either, so we needed to get rid of them!

We bought Ultrasonic Pest Repellers, which plug into wall outlets, and repel bugs. We bought one for every room in the house, and I think we've only seen 4 spiders in the last 18 months, which is down from 4 a day!

Sunbeam makes them, and we bought them at either Lowes or Home Depot.

Re: Bug rant

Anna, I wish I had your outlook on bugs - I really do! But, I just can't be that bug friendly when I know that if I see spiders in my house, it's b/c their food supply (other bugs!) is plentiful and that's NOT okay with me. I can peacefully co-exist w/insects in the wilderness, but I do NOT want them taking up a comfy residence in my home!

Re: Bug rant

Claud They should at LEAST chip in for the mortgage, right ???

Even if we're outdoors, or driving lets say, and he sees one on the windshield on the outside of the car, he pulls over or slows down.... they really dont phase me. Theyre kinda cute.

Re: Bug rant

Elizabeth,

Most ants either swarm (meaning they'll be gone in a short while) or are there b/c of food. Any chance the prior owners were messy?

Raid makes an ant bait that has food it in that is poisionous. The ants eat it and bring it back to their nest and it kills off the other ants. It takes about 2 weeks for it to kick in - but it does work. I know it is gross in the meantime...but they will go away. Find wherever it is that they are coming in your home and put the trap there.

Also....if you find a stray, spray it with Fantastic. No kidding - it kills them.

I personally try to avoid spraying pesticides whenever I can. If the raid trap doesn't work and you do hire an exterminator, ask them for a MSDS sheet (material safety data sheet) on the pesticide. They are required by law to have it. The MSDS will tell you all about the chemicals, health warnings (if any) and re-entry periods.

As a former fellow Flushing girl, I understand your pain! Good luck!

Re: Bug rant

Karen-Ugh! Just the word swarm creeps me out! The previous owners were very clean and they lived here for 35 years. I got the ant baits but I dont have them in all the rooms yet. I hope they work. Yuck! Yuck! Yuck! I havent seen any in 2 days which means Im due tonight. I swear they come out when DH is not home.

Thanks for the info on MSDS, I will ask about that.

I have to jump in too. I lived in NHP and moved 2 miles to Mineola and we have a ton of bugs in our backyard. OH MY!!! We just had a bbq on Friday and they kept flying in my house as you open the door. Big ones ... like crickets, mosquitos and even a praying mantis!!! Ugh - I want to get one of those vacuum bug things that you put outside that work on propane. I can't stand it!!! Rob was vacuuming them off the cieling.

Re: Bug rant

Elizabeth, they're not carpenter ants, are they? The really fat ones? 10 in a week is a lot. I hope it's not them. We had them and they disappeared pretty quickly but I couldn't believe how much $$$$ we spent to get rid of them. Good luck.

Re: Bug rant

They better not be carpenter ants!!!!!!!!!! We had the place checked before we purchased it and we were told no carpenter ants by the exterminator. They are big but I would consider them fat.
