Bummed about the holidays...

Bummed about the holidays...

We live in NC, and all of our family lives in either MD or NY. Well, for Thanksgiving we would of liked to go up to LI, I just started a new job last week, and me and my DH HAVE to work on Friday. So that keeps us in town here. Now for Christmas we could go up to LI, or MD but we decided to spend our son's 1st Xmas at home. He'll be almost a year. Well anyway, my in-law's live in MD. We went up to MD the weekend of Halloween for my sister-in-law's wedding. Now, it's only a 3 hour ride from where we live, a lot closer than LI. We had asked them what they were doing for Thanksgiving since we can't get away. They're going up to NY. Fine. Then we asked what they were doing for Xmas. They say well we're just probably going to stay home, but we're more than welcome to come up there if we want? They'll get a tree if we come. My problem is this... this is their only grandson's first xmas, and we're only 3 hours away. You would think they would want to spend it with us here. Shouldn't they understand that we want to be at home for his 1st Xmas? We also just bought a house in Sept. so this is a first Xmas here for all of us. For us to go away is a little more difficult. We have to try to get someone to let out our dogs, my DH would have to take off from his 2nd job, which means we would lose money, which we can't afford right now, and gas money. We are so tight with money since I was out of work for 6 weeks, and didn't get much unemployment, that we had asked them if they could help up with money for a couple of bills. Of course they said no to that too! It's not like they don't have the time or money. They are rolling in the money right now. God forbid they help us out! Anyway, this is similiar to the situation that happened when our son was about to be born. They didn't care to come until a couple of weeks after he was born because they had other obligations. WHAT!!! Your son is about to become a father, and you had other obligations??? Well, I wrote my MIL an email that explained how important this was to their son for them to be there. They ended up driving down while I was in the hospital. But, my reason for being upset about all of this is because why don't they want to come see us and their grandson? They always want us to come there? It's more difficult for us. I don't get it. My DH is pretty hurt about how his relationship has changed with his family. Ever since we've moved out of state over 5 years ago, no one treats us the same anymore. It's pretty depressing.

No one ever comes to see us... we're always going out of our way to see everyone else!

Sorry you have all of this going on.

Just celebrate the holidays with your DH and son - it will be nice and cozy and make it a special day for your family. Maybe start a new tradition or cook some new recipe

Unfortunately we can't pick our families....

I would want to stay home for Christmas if I were you too!

Did you invite your family or your IL's to come down to NC for Christmas?

I like enjoying MY family not my in-laws or my folks nobody just my immediate family. Dont get me wrong I love them all . Yes, it might make you sad. But you have to start your own traditions as a family. Thats how I would look at it.
