So I brought my dress to my seamstress over the weekend to have it fitted.
We were talking about the bustle and she said that it was way too heavy to bustle, and she suggested I just use the loop underneath to put around my wrist.
I love the idea, but if the dress is heavy, am I going to WANT to lug it around all night?!
For those of you with heavy dresses, what are you doing??

Re: Bustle question....
my dress and train have a LOT of bead work and embroidery on which makes it heavy but my seamtress is doing a french bustle with a lot of points so it looks full and i guess it also distributes the weight of the train so it's not all hanging off of one point. Know what I mean?

Thanks dear.
I'm a little concerned b/c my dress has buttons all the way down the back of the dress. Would that interfere if I did a french bustle?

i agree, if its too heavy then wouldn't it be worst to hold it all on your wrist?

Bon, there is no way you can walk around all night with your train strapped to your wrist... you'll want to kill someone! Tell her to bustle it in a way that it won't fall out! Easy as pie!

Exactly. I walked around with that damn wrist strap just for photos before the ceremony and was getting annoyed. You might need to go french to distribute the weight but you have to have a bustle....JMO

Thanks guys.
Yeah - not really feeling the wrist thing. I held it for like 2 minutes and nearly died.

Re: Bustle question....
I hate bustles, and the thought of carrying it on my wrists infuriates me without ever having to actually do it.
I have already talked to my seamstress about doing a 9 point bustle. This allows you to gather the fabric pulling upward simialr to a curtain being pulled up at an old theater.
The bustle will have to be adjusted several times I am sure........but it's a pretty look and makes me happier!

Re: Bustle question....
i'm beyond shocked that your seamstress told you that!!! she should be looking for the best bustle for you--and chances are that it would be a french bustle with multiple points to distribute the weight evently.
i would make sure that you talk with her again and ask her to figure it out---there is no way you can walk around all nite with that on your wrist--you will NOT have a good time and won't be able to enjoy yourself......sounds to me like she's being a little lazy!

i agree with the others... you do not want to hold your dress all night. she must do a bustle... i didn't think any dress was too heavy for a bustle, but i'm no seamstress.

Nah, she's just old and works out of her house. She does mostly alterations - not wedding gowns.
I think she isn't up on the wedding bustle hooplah!
I'll call her and see what she can do.

yea i'm pretty sure even with those buttons that go all the way down the dress they can still do a french bustle and make it look beautiful!

Re: Bustle question....
Bonnie i have to agree you are not going to want to walk around all night holding the back of your dress.
My train is about a million pounds and is all buttons down the back and beading at the bottome and they are going to do a bustle.
On many of the dresses I tried on (with buttons) they did one there they tucked it under but down low -- not sure of the name but I think it would work on your dress. It would show the buttons and keep the ruffle at the bottom exposed.
ETA: I found a site with it -- it was the pick-up bustle french style.

Re: Bustle question....
My bustle broke THREE times durring the wedding because it just wasn't strong enough to hold the weight of my dress. Soooo I wound up with my train in my hand most of the night, which wasn't terrible but it was super annoying.
Moral of this story: DO NOT carry your train, you will get supremely aggravated.

I have to agree, also, that you won't want to carry your dress around all night - however I've heard from multiple bride's that their bustle's have broken...so I would be SURE to have it bustled at multiple point and bring safety pins or something in case it breaks!

Re: Bustle question....
My bustle broke and the dress was too heavy so the safety pins we tried kept coming open too. Still had fun though! If she doesn't know what she's doing maybe you should go to someone more experienced just for the bustle...
