I'm trying to decide which I would want for my wedding cake. All of the pictures I find of cakes I like are fondant but honestly I've never even tasted it. Which is better?? Both my sister and sister in law to be had buttercream.

Re: buttercream or fondant??
Fondant kind of tastes like a stale dry marshmallow to me.
Buttercream is very yummy when its not too sweet.

Re: buttercream or fondant??
Posted by autumnbride10 My baker said fondant is more for the look....
I actually asked a cake designer about this, and she told me that she only uses fondant for commercially photographed cakes, never for weddings, unless the design absolutely required it.

Re: buttercream or fondant??
We had buttercream, but if fondant is made correctly and with the proper flavorings, it can be good.
If you have chosen your bakery already (or if your cake is included) ask to have a tasting of both with your cake and filling types. They should be willing to accommodate you.
Fondant, in order to taste good, must be made with white butter (which you can really only get shipped from Europe)- so instead of paying that price, people use CRISCO!
Buttercream please.

Re: buttercream or fondant??
if you want the fondant look but buttercream taste then just have the baker make you a fondant cake and only make the layer you will cut into with cake inside, the rest will be just the plastic shape of a cake with fondant over it. Then ask him for your guests to make sheet cake that will have buttercream and serve it to the guests, really not a big deal. Also fondant peels right off, and you can pull it with the fork so if somebody doesnt like it they dont have to eat it lol. I do that with ALL cakes, i dont like when its all frosting, whether its buttercream, whipped cream or whatever. So i always eat the cake from one side and when i start getting towards the edge which has frosting i just dont eat it.
I wanted a 6 tiered mad hatter cake and needed to do fondant so i went with that. I have viennese hour too so whoever doesnt like it doesnt have to eat it, but the fondant is on just one small side of a sliced cake so if that one small side prevents guests from eating it thats fine with me, they have other sweets to eat during VH

Re: buttercream or fondant??
i would say buttercream because it's more economical.. and taste wise, it is better.. but i'm more a cake person than the icing..

Buttercream. Fondant looks better, but the taste is rates a thumbs down. Buttercream looks good, although admittedly it may not have the exact finish of the fondant. The taste of buttercream outweighs the marginal gain in appearance from fondant.

Re: buttercream or fondant??
can we post pics of fondant cakes & buttercream cakes so I can see the 'difference' everyone is talking about?
I saw a pic of a wedding cake that my vendor made....i swore it was fondant which is why I was worried about which I would pick. I just found out it was whipped cream!!! Im so happy....you could not tell the difference they did such an amazing job. They're letting me choose what ever cake I want and a grooms cake too. Any ideas? The FH loves sports. Also, they said I can go as big as I want so I might do a filler layer because I want a huge cake!!!

Re: buttercream or fondant??
unless you find a bakery that rolls their fondant fresh(a lot order out for it) - it can be REAAAL bad. it's actually very bitter - so if u are leaning towards it make sure u go for tastings. I will be honest, most of my cakes were fondant style too...but my RH assured me that if i went with a smooth buttercreme that they would pull off the same elegant look....and they did! AND OMG IT WAS SO GOOD! seriously the tastiest cake i've ever had...i still think about it from time to time!
