No one in my family bakes, so i don't know the difference, but which one did you put on your cake (or which is your preference).
Thanks!

Re: buttercream or whipped cream?
People usually don't do whipped because it needs to be refrigerated and since the cake is so big it is impossible to do.

Re: buttercream or whipped cream?
thanks everyone!
i still have no clue what buttercream is - i'm sure i've had it, but no one said 'oh, that's buttercream' when i did
FH picked the butter cream, cuz him and his family loved it, and then my mom told me that everyone hates it and that no one would eat it - so i got all confused
I think i'm going with buttercream - but i may go to the bakery just so i know what to expect
Thanks again!

Re: buttercream or whipped cream?
I was also told (by Audreys Bakery) that Whipped Cream is not available May threw September. For my design we had to go with Buttercream but I guess we would have had to anyway.

Re: buttercream or whipped cream?
We did buttercream....ok pics are not posting that I know are small enough so somthing is wrong..sorry I tried to post the pic (each time I get thrown off the boards when I do that??)
I think whipped cream tastes better BUT if you want your cake displayed the whole night, you have to use buttercream because the whipped cream will start to melt and drip.

Re: buttercream or whipped cream?
I went with buttercream, b/c I wanted a basketweave design & whipped cream isn't firm enought for that.
I like the taste of both. I was told our cake woudln't be on display if it was whipped cream, but I don't think it was anyay. I am pretty sure it was brought our during coffe (which was before the cake cutting)

Buttercream is what's usually on birthday sheet cakes. I love buttercream - it's sweeter - and doesn't have to be refrigerated.

I prefer whipped cream, but we are doing buttercream because we were told it would be better for the cake that we wanted...Sorry if that doesn't help at all...

Re: buttercream or whipped cream?
MOST people I encounter prefer the whipped cream, so I am so happy when someone gets a buttercream frosting, so I can scrape it from their cake, and be on a sugar high all night!!
I LOVE icing....but pick whatever you like, it will be great!

Re: buttercream or whipped cream?
I heard that the downside to buttercream is that if your baker is on the cheap side they substitute the butter with shortening. If you choose buttercream make sure you ask that they use all butter and no substitutions. I personally like whipped cream better, it's more fluffy.

Re: buttercream or whipped cream?
I'd go with whipped cream.Buttercream is very good, but it's also very heavy. Whipped cream is light and airy, and I think is a better choice for a wedding cake. Think about it at most weddings you are so stuffed by the time the cake comes out, wouldn't you rather have something light than something heavy after all that food?? JMO
