Butterflies for the ceremony

Butterflies for the ceremony

Is anyone doing this? and knows how it actually works?

Do they ship them in cacoons or something? Sorry if I sound stupid but I'm interested in learning more about it because it looks like a cool idea. especially since we're getting married outside!

I was going to do this. But then I heard horror stories where some of them didn't hatch and dead Larva was being tossed at the bride.

Ditto! And, there was this whole 'cruelty to butterflies' and 'you're ruining the ecosystem' debate that was going on.

Actually, I thought they were frozen and defrosed in the boxes. My cousing told me they told her she can position them on her bouquet and they would defrost and fly out...

too wierd for me...

pretty much changed my mind, I don't think it will be warm enough on my wedding night for the butterflies to actually want to fly out of their box.

I am doing a butterfly release. I spoke with a very nice man who breeds butterflies and was very confident that there wouldn't be a problem.

They are shipped to you in envelopes that you can either release them from or take them out and put them in a box, cage, etc.

They are shipped overnight with ice to keep them cold. They will think it is time to hibernate and will case less stress. A few hours before the wedding, remove the ice and they will begin to 'wake up'. I'm looking forward to doing this and hopefully all will be ok.

I don't know though that sounds kinda mean.

Besides the cruelty issue, I have heard of them dying seconds after release...I dont think thats the look a bride would want.

Re: Butterflies for the ceremony

there are two dif types- one where the larvea is sent in the little boxes where they hatch and then are ready for flight when in 4 days or something...they are the cheaper or the two options
then the other is when they ship the already formed butterfly in the box the day before- this is more expensive- you can pick the type of butterfly-

there could be more options but i dont know...

I didnt want to spend the more money on the butterflies already boxed- it was A LOT of $$$$$ and I am too nervous to do the larvea which is cheaper but i do not want them to not hatch...or chance it that some will be dead-

i like the idea- but it seems like more work than i really want to put into it

I am doing them too. The most important factor for the releases is the temperature. A May wedding is not recommended for the butterflies. It has to be at least 75 degrees for them to fly. Summer months is the best time. So July and August are the best. I would not recommend it for any other time. And as far as the whole environment issue. The company asks you where the butterflies are being released and they send specific butteflies that can adapt to that particular environment and temperature.
