I love love butterflies and I would love to release them at my ceremony. Have any of you girls been to a wedding where they had this? Or is anyone doingthis? If so, where do I get the butterflies from?

Re: Butterfly release
I have heard some really unfortunate things about butterfly releases, even though it sounds like a beautiful idea in theory. Mostly I've heard that the butterflies die in the boxes while waiting to be released and you open the box and a bunch of dead butterflies fall out...
On the butterfly theme, totally unrelated to releases - whiteaisle.com has some beautiful butterfly brooches that can be used either as bo-k jewelry, on a dress or even in your hair.

Re: Butterfly release
Haven't used them, haven't heard good or bad stories with releases. But here is what their site says. I have to assume they may get knocked around when shipped.

How do the butterflies survive shipping? Each butterfly is fed and carefully placed inside our triangular cardstock boxes for their safety. They are surrounded by soft padding and packaged in an insulated cooler with a cool-pack. The cool temperature combined with minimal light keeps the butterflies calm and naturally inactive during shipping. Butterflies are sent via overnight delivery to arrive the day before your event.
What happens to them after release? We ship butterflies the USDA has approved for your area of the country so that only butterflies indigenous to your area are released.

That's what happened at my girlfriend's wedding. The few that survived were pretty, but the ones that didn't were unfortunate.

Re: Butterfly release
i wanted to do the butterflies too but when i found out they are sent to me i des. not too. they are sent you you frozen then you have the nurse them back to warmth and feed them and most of the die b/4 the wedding and if you dont let them out and if they are in the dark they fall asleep and they wont come out when it is time; So if you want you can put them in the a big air flowing cage with full light and let them all out at once that way .

Yup, I worked a wedding where this happened. It's a beautiful concept, but unfortunately they all died (it was about 90 degrees out which didn't help) and everyone threw dead butterflies in the air. It wasn't fun to clean up either

Re: Butterfly release
Please don't do it.
Not only is is pretty cruel, but both times I saw this done, most of the butterflies were dead by the end of the ceremony.
Not only that, even if they are alive, they are completely 'out of it' when you open the package. They don't fly away right away - they are disoriented and slow moving and sort of lay there until they eventually attempt to fly away.
Both times I saw it, it was just sad and I felt so bad that so many butterflies had to die for no good reason... Not to mention it was disgusting for the people opening up a package to find a dead butterfly.
Beautiful thought, but doesn't work practically.

And even the ones that aren't dead don't fly right away after being in that package all day. They sort of fall to the ground and wiggle around.
It's awful.

Re: Butterfly release
Oh wow, that sounds horrible! I thought it was a nice idea at first because as a kid, we used to always get caterpillars and would watch them change into butterflies and then release them and none of them ever died, but I guess the preparation here is totally different.
