I can't get over how damn expensive it is! FH and I currently live with my parents and will hopefully own our very own shack/cardboard box within a year of getting married. We look back at our parents and even though we are doing better financially we can afford anything near what they were able to buy. I get so depressed when I see what houses go for. The new houses they are building are HUGE too- who can afford to live there?

OMG, do a search under, 'Leaving Long Island' I did a post on this a while ago, you wouldn't believe how many responses I got! We're probably going to have to move to North Carolina, which by the way is gorgeous!

It's a headache and 1/2.....
There isnt even a happy medium, b/c even if you decide to go all the way out east and get a little bit more for your money, gas prices at $2.17 just puts you right back down where you started from.......
So either save on a house or save on gas....

That is why places like the Dallas area and NC are BOOMING! you can buy a 3000+ sq ft house there for $200 - $250K. And... industry there is booming as well.

Re: Buying a house in LI
Tell me about it girls. I think our 'generation' got screwed!!! Think about years ago when your parents bought their first home. If they made say 20K a year then their house was like 40K, but now if you make 40K your house is like 400K...what the hell is that.
I would love to know how people do it, really.
We tried to move away to Florida, but came back because it was tough to live in a state all by ourselves. I was ok with it, but FH had a really hard time adjusting. So we came back and we are now renting an apartment that is big time expensive. Don't get me wrong it's beautiful, but it's a lot. I always said I would never pay in the thousands for rent...yeah, right, who was I kidding?? Hey, what can you do. I'm still playing my lotto everyday...I won $5 bucks this morning. Someone has to Win

I agree. They are popping houses in every free land. And squashing them together. Its getting a little ridiculous. For a couple to start out there's no way (unless you come from money- sure as hell it ain't me) to buy a house. Me and my fh were just talking about that Monday. Maybe an apartment, but even those are getting up there in price.
