So lately, me and FH have been looking at houses to buy since we currently rent.
How many of you wish that maybe you bought a house and had a smaller wedding?
If we weren't having such an expensive wedding, we could have totally purchased the house we are looking at. But FH wants to wait till around the wedding to buy, but I think the time might be now.
Anyone have any advice on what you and FH plan to do if you don't already own a house? I can't see how its possible to save for both right now, or to buy a house right now and be able to continue saving for the wedding and afford a mortgage.
I am so confused and torn with what to do!
TIA

Re: Buying a House vs Expensive Wedding
if my parent's weren't paying for my wedding and i had to do it on my own i would have the smaller wedding in like my parent's backyard and not go into debt for the wedding and save money for a house definitely...

Well FH already owns his own home but I would use the $$ we get back from guests to put toward the house. That is what we are doing to renovate his home.

i would definetly have cut back much more and saved for a house. we do have enough for a down payment now but if we do buy now then we are flat a$$ broke!
so we are going to wait and hope to have some wedding gift money to use.

if we find a house before the wedding we a lucky enough that our parents will let us borrow money for the down payment.

You know, it all depends. I personally think that having the downpayment money- say $60k+ in cash is not enough. You also have to consider fees/taxes/closing costs/ ect. Not to mention furnishing the house and any renovations.
We initially were going purchase but I may be moving to London for 18 months in 2010 and we don't plan on kids for at least 3 years so having an empty house which we may not even live in right now does not make sense for us. Opportunities will be there. Only you guys know what is best for you.

Re: Buying a House vs Expensive Wedding
I just had FSIL call me telling me that her friends neighbor is selling their house for a steal because they are getting a divorce. She said it is in the same town as the house we want.
Turns out...it is the same house! So, my parents, FH's parents, are going to try to help us work this out now. It seems meant to be! We have a good amount already for a down payment, but our parents want to try to help us get this house now.
I am so excited! We are going to try to look at the house this weekend!

Re: Buying a House vs Expensive Wedding
I would say spend the money on the house....we are going to look for houses after our wedding because I don't want to deal with planning the wedding AND looking/buying/decorating/moving into a house at the same time..... but I say the house is way more important than the wedding

Re: Buying a House vs Expensive Wedding
It makes me so sick knowing that we are dropping what could be a down payment on our wedding, but it's something our families want and something everyone expects, and just to be honest I really want a big wedding too. We're taking the $$ from gifts to put in savings for a down payment and we'll hopefully be moving out of NY within the next year or so which will really help with the price of the house and amount of DP.

Re: Buying a House vs Expensive Wedding
We dont own a house. We currently rent. We have a smaller and less expensive wedding. Granted, it's still denting our pockets, BUT we're managing.
As far as the living situation, FILS are selling their house in Queens and we are purchasing a 2 family house with them. Many people think its crazy to move in with FILS but I adore them and eventually we will purchase a 1 family home.
The only thing I regret out of this whole thing was booking my first RH which has YET to give me the money back...

Re: Buying a House vs Expensive Wedding
we arent having an 'expensive wedding' to begin with I mean I guess compared to other people's wedding.. lol .. so we probably wouldnt have had enough to put down a good house and so we are waiting until after the wedding.
Also, the housing market is going to be slow for at least another 2 years and I think we could still be able to buy a house that we normally couldnt otherwise afford

lol its true. What constitutes an expensive wedding? Some people have different opinions on the cost of weddings and with the cost of DPs for houses now, forget it!
Supposedly the bubbles gonna pop soon. Who knows.

thats what they keep saying.. but I just heard on CNN that think they it will get better but still at least another 2 years to get houses that you wouldnt be able to before.. so thats good news to me because in my area houses are like 1million and the down payment for that is like 500 thousand!...sorry but my wedding is soooooooo no where near that..

Re: Buying a House vs Expensive Wedding
We went with a smaller, winter wedding that was pretty inexpensive compared to other weddings in our area. I used my bonus money from last year so I didn't really need to dip much into savings. I was adamant about not having any debt whatsoever. I don't felt like I sacrificed much, I still had great food, good vendors, and a fabulous dress, and saved thousands by cutting out stuff like favors, chair covers, fancy invites, etc.

Re: Buying a House vs Expensive Wedding
we cant afford either so it really wasnt an option to have a super big wedding or a expensive house
