Buying China

Buying China

So one of my FH's cousin bought us a place setting of our china from BBB online & shipped to our apt. so when i opened it every dish was broken. so i go to return it & there was no problem but they said i should get in another 2 weeks. i thought they carried the china in the store. the woman said it is shipped from the manufacturer they don't carry any fine china. What if it comes broken again?? i know its not BBB fault. the box was clearly marked fragile handle with care.

Is this the case with fortunoffs & macys?? i know BBB would return for cash. but i really like my china

BBB does a horrendous job wrapping china. Usually it's tossed in a regular box with a sheet of bubble wrap. We've had parts of 2 place settings broken + our creamer and sugar bowl. BBB took them back w/out a problem and the replacements came in fine. They would save a lot of money and energy if they just packed things well!!!!

We received tons of delicate glassware from Crate & Barrel and not a single thing has broken. They wrap everything VERY VERY VERY well.

Maybe they just have the displays in all stores and I just assumed that they carried the china there. Hopefully it will ship to you with no issues next time

Re: Buying China

I don't think BBB carries stock of their china in the stores. I was told they all have to get shipped from their warehouse in NJ.

thanks for the heads up. i was hoping they carried the china in the store so it wouldn't have to be shipped again.

Re: Buying China

I think certain BBB locations carry it in the store. BUt there are certain locations that don't even have a full bridal registry section (west babylon doesnt). So I think it depends where you go. I believe the one in westbury does carry china. But I could be wrong.

Re: Buying China

Something interesting to keep in mind is that sometimes the open stock clearance tables include china. I think some of it was ours! (We returned a place setting where the big dinner place came in broken but the rest was fine).

They had a huge stack of salad plates, cups, saucers, soup bowls, etc in a million different patterns, all marked down to $5 each. FH and I decided to get the 3 pieces from our set, and then we used our 20% off coupons (we have about 200 of them) and got 3 pieces for $4 each! they make good spares, considering they are usually $25-35 a piece otherwise.

Guess a lot of people had broken place settings though...

I'm pretty sure they have the China on display at some stores (others have you order it through a binder of stock info) but they don't keep stock -- everything has to be ordered from NJ.

I think Macy's and Fortunoff have stock in the stores but I don't know for sure about that.

Re: Buying China

I went to Macys to buy China for a shower I was going to and the sales clerk told me that no one does that. Sometimes they carry a place setting or two in the back for display, should the display one get broken, but other than that it's always sent from the manufacturer. BBB is the same. The thing is, some stores don't even carry DISPLAY china (I know the one closer by me in Lindenhurst does not but the bigger one in Huntington does). However, you can't just go in there and buy the china either - they order it for you and you get it from the manufacturer.

It was probably a fluke that yours got broken and was the fault of UPS and not BBB. I've received 4 place settings so far (from Mikasa via BBB) and they're all fine.

Re: Buying China

BBB didn't wrap my crystal glasses well either - they were just thrown in a box, no bubble wrap. So some of them are broken.

I think larger BBB's have a china section - the one near Roosevelt Field mall does. I am planning on going there to rebuy the stuff that was broken.
