Has anyone ever bought a home with an inground (presently in-use) oil tank? If so, did you test it before buying the house, what method did you use to test it, and was the home owner willing to allow the test? Need some advice....

Re: Buying home with inground oil tank, maybe??
We have a home w/an inground tank. We didn't test before purchasing the home (the seller didn't want to test it, understandably.) There was no proof that it was, or is, leaking so we haven't tested it either. We know we'll eventually have to have it removed and a new tank placed in the garage or basement.

our house had an oil tank in the ground...we weren't so thrilled about that so our sellers were awesome enough to abandon the ground tank & install a new one in the basement. it was something i felt strongly about & knew we would eventually have to do it. our sellers were amazingly nice people though!

yes, if it leaks.. enviornmental clean-up can cost uo to $100,000 depending upon level of contamination.

Our house had one when we bought it. We looked into testing. After talking to a number of places, the conclusion was that if the tank was leaking, the oil usage from the house would have increased. We called the homeowner's oil company and found out their history of oil usage and it was fine. So we bought the house, had the oil tank abandoned with foam and had one installed above ground. All said and done, about 2200$, including the shed to go around the outside oil tank.

You can also have one put under ground according to environmental standards. My parent's had their old one filled w/foam and they one was done according to the new standards, they did this a few years ago.

Underground tanks must be double walled and have cathodic protection. It's cheaper to properly abandon the UST and put in an abovegrouned tank. I work as an environmental engineer, so FM me if you have any specific questions.
