I was reading in NY Weddings yesterday that if you plan to lose a lot of weight, you might want to consider buying off the rack because you can buy it closer to the wedding day. Not having looked at a single dress yet (I'm convinced that 15 lbs will disappear by mid-August), I don't really understand what 'off the rack' means except that Monica and Rachel on Friends seemed really opposed to it.

I remember reading once that a dress can generally be altered 4 sizes down without losing the integrity or style of the gown. I think you would be fine if you lost 20#.

Some gowns can take several months to come in so I would start looking now to have the most options.

I wouldn;t buy off the rack!

Ahh, but you do need to order if u want your dream dress. A lot of designers need 8 mos in advance to order the gown...You ALWAYS take a dress in, you can't take it out...and I would not want to be running around looking for a dress off the rack the month before the wedding, what if you don't find one you like? Just buy the dress now, tell them ahead of time you plan to lose weight, and they can probably tell you howmuch that particular dress cna be taken in and you're all set..a LOT of brides lose weight, you'll be fine!

I've lost about 15 pounds since I ordered my dress, but I'm not worried about it. I spoke with the sales person about it when we ordered the dress and made sure that it could be taken in. I also watched how they measured me and kept track of what it was. In addition to weighing myself, I also take my measurements at the same place that they did to see where I am. Also, my dress is a ball gown so the only measurements that matter at the chest and waiste.

You should definately start trying on dresses. The styles you like will still be the same regardless of your weight. We all have styles that look the best on us and some dresses just won't look good no matter how skinny we are.

I ordered two sizes down and they can take it in another 3 if I loose enough weight. They will make you sign a waiver to 'downsize' your dress...

I went and picked out what dress I wanted 1 year before the wedding. I then asked them what was the latest time I could order - they told me 3 months later.

So, I waited those 3 months, and they remeasured me and ordered the proper size.

This was good for me because I didnt wait a long time to pick out my dress - I had 3m onths to look for something, if I needed it. But when it came time to order, I knew what dress I wanted, I was remeasured and they ordered it; no stress no hassle.

The dress came in at about the 5 month mark - they said it would be 7 to 8 months.

I go for my first fitting in 2 weeks - yay!

Good luck!

I've also lost at least 15lbs since I ordered my dress and I'm not worried at all. I plan to lose at least 10 more before all is said and done so I wouldn't worry about it -- go shopping now and order your gown when you find it. You may have a hard time finding 'the one' like I did so better that you start now. Plus you need the time to order.

One caveat: being heavier than I wanted to be DID make it more difficult to find my dress, I believe. So cut yourself some slack when you are looking in that mirror and try hard to picture yourself 10lbs thinner. Also, don't let them talk you into ordering one size larger than you are now.

I lost 20 pounds after I bought my dress. It was easily altered to fit my smaller size!
