Bye Bye NY

Bye Bye NY

Don't get me wrong I absolutely love everything about NY! I have lived here my entire 26 years of life and would love to raise my future children here. Sadly though I can barely see owning a dog let alone raising the two-three kids I want. I am a paralegal and even though I do a TON of work my pay does not reflect it, FH was a plumber but he got laid off a while and took a job in a metal factory because he couldn't find anything else. Soooooooo my plan is that we are going to leave NY as soon as we can can after the wedding and start a new life there. I (as well as FH after a little coaxing) have decided on North Carolina. When the day comes I know it will suck but life is pretty much one big sacrifice Anyone having the same problem or can you all afford to stay here?

I hear ya!

I am back in school trying to afford it. I graduated with my BSBA May 2008. I had the experience, but I was always losing jobs to people with Masters... so now I'm going for my MBA. I am crossing my fingers... keeping moving.. and I just keep trying. I try to keep a positive attitude, knowing that something will work out in due time.

Maybe something will come up for you. Cablevision was hiring for a paralegal.. and paralegals make good money. There are so many city and state tests for positions, including plumber positions. Keep your heard up and something will work out.

I definately know where your coming from!

Its really hard to afford to live on LI... but like futurewifey said.. maybe something good will come up.. you can def find a good paying job as a paralegal

Re: Bye Bye NY

I know but most of the higher paying jobs are in Manhattan and by the time you weigh the costs of travel it equals out to the same as here on LI. Maybe once I get 10 more years under my belt and become a senior paralegal the top I could make is maybe 60k a year which right now seems like a lot but realistically it isn't enough to own a house and raise a family in this state. Raleigh North Carolina seems like a pretty ok place to live. Maybe not a place to party but a place to settle down and start a family =] FH takes every state test he can but most of the time all they want is your money, for jobs like those you need to know someone and unfortunately we don't know anyone. There are way too many people in NYS and they all need jobs and the fact is there aren't enough jobs. The cost of living is insane. I have a friend who lives in NC she has a four bedroom town house all utilities included for 1,300 a month. Her husband does Loss prevention for Target (pretty much a security guard) and they can afford to live on his one pay check. That would be impossible here. I would miss my family and friends like crazy but with FH by my side I will be fine.... or at least I hope I will

Re: Bye Bye NY

sorry for crashing...FH and I moved for the same reason. I currently live in NC, and it truly depends on where you live down here whether housing is cheaper or not. What area were you guys thinking?

Sorry, just read its Raleigh. Definitely more affordable, you just have to know where to stay away from! Once you get closer to Durham/Chapel Hill (Duke and UNC are there), houses are not that much less expensive than they are in NY! But you do get way more land!

Re: Bye Bye NY

I know a lot of people from ny, nj, penn. all move down south to save money. How long have you been living there? How is the job situation out there? Are the people nice? My friend lives in Raleigh and she says everyone is very nice and most of the people she knows have moved there (from ny) because its more affordable. Do you like it? I only have my friends opinion and shes a stay at home mom who doesn't know much about the job market and those sorts of things. Thank you for responding I can use all the advice I can get. It is a life altering decision especially because all of my family is here and he doesn't have a lot of family at all

I've been living here for about 9 months. I really like it, the people here are VERY friendly! Its also in the Bible belt, so religion is big down here.

The job market is OK, probably better than NY at this point. I'm in academia, so I'm an exception to all employment rules, but it took FH about 6 months to find a job down here (he is in construction management). As for a paralegal, I have no idea what the job situation would be like.

We are renting a townhouse right now for 800 a month, although it is TINY, but it is also 5 minutes from UNC, so the prices in our neighborhood are not indicative of the state in general. They tend to jack everything up since rich undergrads will pay

We are moving out to Durham in march, and we are getting a 3br 2ba 1800 square foot house for 1200/month.

Please let me know if you need help or have any questions! We are still fairly new, but we do know the good/bad neighborhoods!

I left NY when I went away to School and although I LOVE NY, I could never see myself moving back. I've lived in several different states (and countries) and never realized how much I could love living somewhere else as well. Every place has been different but after spending the last 3 years in Washington state, I could see myself going back and raising a family there.

I definately understand the price thing, but there are lots of great places across the US to raise a family, just do a lot of research and make sure you're not settling on what you want.

Re: Bye Bye NY

my FH has been stationed in NC (near wilmington) for a few years, and I would go back and forth to visit...it's nice down there, and I enjoyed it.

however, in my field, as a teacher, I would be taking literally a 40 thousand dollar paycut so it didn't make sense for us to move down there.

but the houses are way bigger and lots more land!

Yeah I wouldn't even know where to start in trying to find a job there. I would probably get my friend to send me a pay as you go phone so I would have a local number. I also hear that you should get a p.o. box out there and have them forward your mail. It would be a big leap of fate but I know we won't be able to make it here The paralegal jobs I have seen on Craigslist pay pretty much what I make here and its worth more in NC then it is here lol. I'm not sure exactly how to start and its an added stress to planning a wedding lol. It must be hard for you to plan a wedding on LI from NC so more power to you!

That's exactly what I am thinking! I love NY but only because I have grown up here and do not know anything else. The only issue with going any further is FH. He isn't very big on change and even getting him to consider NC has been quite the challenge lol. We both want the same things like children, a house of our own and a life without all the added worry that will come with living here. He knows we can't very well raise a family in a basement apartment lol. What I really worry about is the reaction to so called 'yankees' my friend in NC says that in Raleigh everyone is from NJ, NY and Philly so its pretty much like here. Where are you living now? I don't wanna go North because I'm not too fond of the cold and Florida is too far for FH. He will only go so far. Plus Raleigh has the added benefits of being the hometown for the Hurricanes lol, he is a Major New York Ranger fan and would miss that the most but at least he could go see them when the came to NC

Re: Bye Bye NY

Well I moved to the West Coast and I totally love seattle. Its still a city, its more laid back than NY, people are nicer and not as stuck up, I really liked the whole vibe. However being in the military I move every few years so FH and I were open to California, NJ, I wanted Charleston, SC bc I heard its nice but he didn't want to be that far South. He also fell in love with Dallas, TX and I adore Austin, TX, but I can't get stationed at either of those places.

Getting away from some of the nasty people I come into contact with daily will be a major plus!! I hear Charleston is Gorgeous! I have an Aunt that goes there very often! If it were up to me I would be as far as possible but I have to respect FH's wishes and eight hours away is far enough for him. I have always wanted to go to Texas! I hear such great things!

Fh and I don't want to leave long island by any means but secretly in the back of my head I think about it sometimes. We're going to try our hardest to make it here first but if we have to leave we will do what we have to but It won't be happily.

Re: Bye Bye NY

FH and I left a year and a half ago....we are both guidance counselors and there were NO jobs! If we both wanted to start working we had to take the risk and move elsewhere. We are now in Florida, just an hour north of Orlando. It is the best thing we could have done. Of course we miss family, but we have completely started a life down here, and we get PLENTY of visitors! So far so good, we are very happy down here. Of course we don't know where life will ultimately take us, but for the time it was the right thing to do, and now we both have careers....who knows what would have happened if we stayed?!? Good luck! Keep us posted!
