CA wineries and spas
my recommendations:
Generally we just drive around and stop wherever we like, but here are some top picks:
Napa wineries:
Domaine Chandon - champagne
Sterling (castle-like - you take a ariel tram to get there)
V. Sattui - just a great feel to it
Napa Valley Wine Train - runs from Napa to St Helena. About 3 hours. Not sure what wineries it stops at (707)253-2111. I think you get lunch and wine tasting on the train. Haven't ever done it, but could be fun.
Have lunch at the Oakville Grocer - delicious gourmet sandwiches. There's one in Oakville and Healdsburg.
places to stay:
Country Garden Inn (get a room in the Rose House for fireplace, jacuzzi and terrace).
Cross Roads Inn
Oak Knoll Inn
Napa Lodging
Spas (I've been to both of these):
Lavendar Hill Spa (Calistoga) - private bath house for couples (so you're in separate tubs next to each other)
Spa off the Plaza (Healdsburg)
(I've also been to Golden Haven but wasn't impressed with the facility)
Wine Country Spas
Sonoma favorites
Ravenswood - yummy wines but not an impressive tasting room.
Sebastiani
Chateau St. Jean
Buena Vista
Sonoma Lodging
Also on the drive up Pacific 1 from LA, I would hit up the wineries just north of Santa Cruz. Starting with Bonny Doon (great wines & fun place). Byington is lovely (huge mansion on a mountain).
Hope this helps!
