Cake

Cake

I am pretty much embarrassed that i am devastated over my cake. I had the whole damn thing picked out and in my head and when this happens its hard for me to settle for anything else.

Well for my birthday we had a fondant cake made by black forest who would be the bakery at my catering hall. IT was sooo pretty looking and everyone was like WOW that is cool looking they never saw fondant before. I was so happy!!!

Then we ate it and the negative remarks came flying out. My family LOVES to make negative comments on anything and everything. FH wouldn't even touch the fondant saying it tasted liked clay and grandma was like this is too chewy for me. They all loved the inside part... yellow cake with strawberry and cream. I ate the fondant and it was okay to me but not as creamy as i had it before. It was very thick and chewy.

SO now what??? I need a smooth icing.. can they do that with buttercream? I really can't back down on this because i am fixated on it.

this is how i want the cake to look like minus a layer!

It a beautiful cake. I don't think it is suppose to taste good. I worked in 3 different bakery a total of 8 yrs and I have tasted it and I don't think it taste that great. You could do buttercream. It is a little bit sweeter and it can stay out on display lonnger.

See if they make a marshmallow based fondant, it is 100 times better. Do you have to get it from this bakery?

Very true, only for looks unless you're one of those people who actually likes the taste of playdo But I think you would need it if you want to decorate the cake like it is in the pic. Buttercream I don't think can actually hold that detailed look. As long as the cake tastes great, I wouldn't have a problem with fondant.

Ughh....I havent had cake in so long that I would just eat an entire cake of fondant and be happy. Cake is my downfall and I miss it so very much!!

My cake has to be fondant because of what I want and I dont really care that people dont like it. Its what I want. They can enjoy the inner part and shut the h e l l up!

You know what.. F them! I am having fondant.. just peel it off and don't eat it.

Thanks people.. at least i know i am not nuts that other people are doing it also. I AM SO GLAD NOW... i will ask about the marshmallow flavoring adding to it. I mean there is buttercream under the fondant anyway.. so roll it off and eat!

i was gonna say the same thing...MOST bakeries buy their fondant but some actually make it themselves and can make it taste delicious. Alot of them are using marshmellow based fondant, or if you watch the ace of cakes he uses rice krispies. This one bakery i go to makes amazing things, and i bought their fondant cupcakes and LOVED it, the fondant infact was my favorite part bc of how good they made it...we gave those out as favors for the e-party and the following day everyone was telling us how delicious it is.

And to answer your question, you can try to smooth out the buttercream, and alot of bakers can actually do a good job, maybe not as perfect as fondant but it can still look decent.

BUT!!!!!!!!! the way to get the look you want and to keep your family and guests happy with the taste is to do this. You order the cake in fondant, they will make only 1 tier with real cake inside, the rest of it will be cake molds with fondant over it and nothing inside, it will just be for show. What you do is ask them to serve sheet cake to your guests, and that is what they will get and it will be without the fondant.

yeah i definitely think having sheet cake served to your guests is the best option and alot of people actually do this...many also do this to save on money bc it comes out to less, if your rh is providing it then it wont make a difference in regards to money but for you then you get what you want and so does everyone else.

Good luck

Re: Cake

I've actually seen some FANTASTICALLY smooth cakes with buttercream icing.

If your baker knows what they're doing, you could recreate that same look with buttercream...

My hall is using Black Forest too and I am fixated on the Fondant look. I'm not a big cake person ( I just like the way it looks) But I always thought fondant was good? (I know I'm prob the only one out there that hates buttercream) I love petite fours and all that. Anyway,I would do what you want, and go with the fondant (try to see if they can do the marshmellow thing) I 'm curious let us know! btw do you have to pay extra for the fondant??

I'm pretty sure fondant costs more per slice...
