So my mom bought me and FH a hummel cake topper from my grandmother. She suffers from severe Alzheimer's and cannot do things for herself anymore, but my mom did as a gesture. Do I use this as a cake topper or do we put it on the table next to it. If its on the table, do we still put something on top of the cake?
I think that is totally up to you....alot depends on the style of your cake. You don't have to have a topper or you can choose to have one on top & one on the table, totally your choice.

Usally the tops are just put on the table.
My sister bought me one that seems too heavy for the cake. I am putting it on the table and using cake flowers on the cake. It is a matter of choice though. That's so nice that she bought you that!
