Cakes

Are you just gonna get your cake from the reception site or are you using an outside bakery. Just curious how many people are not using their places cake. I am definitely getting it elsewhere, nothing against their cakes, i actually thought they were nice but before FI and I even booked the place we had our hearts set on the cake we want.

If you are using an outside place, where are you getting your cake from? ANd if anyone has used colette peters before let me know that is who I will be using.

Sorry for crashing!

I'm not using my RH's cake.... we actually just booked Collette Foley -- she's AMAZING!

Here's her website...

and check out Dbleplay17's review (she used her as well!)

We just had our tasting last weekend... and WOW. so delicious!

FM me if you want more info

Re: Cakes

Thank you so much for the info. Actually I know where we want our cake from, fi and I both want a colette peters cake and what we have our heart set on. Hopefully we'll be able to get it. But again thank you

Re: Cakes

My RH wants $7 per person for their cake - that's pretty high, right?

Re: Cakes

i am using JT's cakes , only because the bakery is very very good . you should ask them if you can go to the bakery and have it designed your way for the same price

Hmmm that is the norm for fondant cake prices.

Re: Cakes

but if you want to spend less than $7 a slice don't get fondant. Hopefully they will work with you

Re: Cakes

dava-that is pretty high. Our rental hall includes the cake but it's very basic and I have in my mind a picture of what I want and it is VERY extravagant. It was one of my stipulations before booking w/ the hall and they told me it would be an extra $295 for the cake that I want, which really isn't that bad. I also had to purchase the edible pearls on my own because the hall wanted to pipe on butter cream but that is not the look i was going for. I used to make cakes so I knew exactly what I wanted and was not settling for anything less!

Re: Cakes

For your RH to charge you that much is alot so that is true. Most places include the cake in the package. At a bakery it is $7 a slice for fondant. There are a few places that do charge between $5-6 a slice but that is the lowest I have seen and I did alot of research on this. I suggest using buttercream. Also to lower the cost you can have the cake but just make the top tier with the filling and all and the rest is just a model and have them serve sheet cake

Re: Cakes

you really have done a lot of research. I was considering looking elsewhere for my cake but when I found out how much it was going to be I just went w/ the RH, we have a really small wedding and I think the price quote I got was $1200, which is insane, I can have a whole viennese hour for that

Re: Cakes

Yeah I wanted a fondant cake for my e-party and for the wedding I am willing to spend more on the cake but not the e-party. I seriously called almost every place in NYC and LI and $5 a slice was the cheapest. $7 was average and alot even charge $8-12 a slice.

Re: Cakes

just a note...

have you all tried fondant before? i know how gorgeous it LOOKS... but JMO, the taste.... not so great!

Re: Cakes

Most fondant does taste horrible. But some bakers actually know how to make it good. They actually make the fondant themselves instead of purchasing it from somewhere else. Also they will put buttercream under the fondant

Re: Cakes

just wanted to make sure you've tasted it... because even with a high end baker, I did NOT like the taste of the fondant! (and it did have the buttercream underneath...)

JMO!

i think it's just one of those things that you love or hate!

to me, the buttercream is just soooo delicious! and even with the fondant handmade with a very thin layer... it just wasn't for us!

Re: Cakes

Well another option is to have them serve your guests sheetcake, which would also make the cake cheaper so this way they get served cake with no fondant on it. I need fondant because i am having stuff painted on the cake and you cant do that with buttercream, but I do understand what you are saying. That is also why I am considering having sheetcake in the back to serve guests.

yeah that's definitely an option! also, i've heard that sometimes they can just peel the fondant off before they slice it.... and since the buttercream is underneath that, it will still be delish!

Yeah I've heard people mention before that you can ask them to just peel off the fondant before they serve it, hmmm definitely an option and something I'll ask them about at the RH

If you like the cakes that they have at your Rh then just go for it. When I saw colette peters on the food network, i loved her cakes and really want one for the wedding.
