cakes with fondant

Original post by AwaitingAugust

is fondant really worth it?

when my friend got married last year, she had a cake with fondant and i thought it was pretty disgusting. tasted like semi-soft flavorless plastic. i don't know if it's because it was ordered from a restaurant, not a bakery (she only had 25 people attending the wedding so a bakery wasn't necessary)

so is that really what fondant tastes like or is it really delicious? why does it cost so much more than buttercream?

Thanks

ps: i'm sure i'll discover the answer whenever FH and I go cake tasting ... but until then, i'm curious

Re: cakes with fondant

I have had cakes with fondant and I actually liked it, but at the same time I am not a big fan of icing. It can sometimes be so sweet it makes my toes curl. But for my cake I am going to go with whatever tastes good. I think when it is done right fondant can be pretty good,

I had fondant on my wedding cake.. I honestly don't remember what it tasted like... but I got my DH a grooms cake for our RD from La Bonne Boulangerie in Port Jefferson and I tasted the fondant on that and it tasted like marshmallows. It was so delish that I kept just eating the fondant... idk maybe I'm weird lol

Re: cakes with fondant

my fondant tastes like sugar, it was really sweet and most people just peeled it off and ate the cake. Fondant is good for preserving your cake for your 1 year anniversary. it prevented the cake part to get freezer burn and our cake actually tasted pretty good after a year.
