I know one of the best ways to get calcium, aside from a supplement, is by drinking milk. I don't like regular milk, but I love chocolate milk. Somebody told me that you don't get a lot of calcium from chocolate milk though, because something in the chocolate prevents you from absorbing it. Has anybody else heard this?

I would avoid chocolate milk because of the caffeine. Try getting calcium from other things if you can.

Re: Calcium through chocolate milk?...
What kind of chocolate milk are we talking about? Personally I don't see how a spoonful of Hershey's syrup could be doing any harm -- its more sugar than chocolate anyhow. And if you aren't drinking coffee (which you are allowed a cup a day) I can't see the caffeine as an issue either. If this is how you are able to drink more milk, I think the benefits outweigh the sugar cost.

I don't know if this helps, but I don't drink milk either, so instead I drink Soy Milk... which has a lot of calcium added... it takes some getting used to, but once you do, it's YUMMY!

Re: Calcium through chocolate milk?...
I read on somewhere that chocolate can decrease the absorbtion of calcium. Talk to your doctor about how much chocolate you have to eat for it realy to have a bad affect. But, I found this online about adding chocolate flavoring.
I have heard that adding chocolate flavouring to milk can affect the body’s ability to absorb calcium from the milk. Is that true?
Cocoa (found in chocolate) contains a naturally occurring compound called oxalic acid. It is known that oxalic acid can combine with calcium to form an insoluble salt, which affects calcium absorption into the body. However, the oxalic acid in chocolate flavouring would probably not have a significant effect on the calcium absorption from chocolate milk. This is because the chocolate flavouring added to milk in relatively small amounts, contains only a small amount of oxalic acid. In fact, scientific research has found that the absorption of calcium from chocolate milk is similar to that from other milk and milk products such as unflavoured milk, yoghurt and cheese. http://www.sanitarium.com.au/qa/qaa.do?qaa-id=88

Re: Calcium through chocolate milk?...
I drank chocolate milk everyday during my pregnancy, since I hate regular milk. I never had any problems. If you are not sure about it, I would just ask your doctor.
