Re: California Rolls
I would check with your Dr. also but I just read something about that this morning. See below!
Babycenter.com
Question: Is it safe to eat sushi or seared fish during pregnancy?
Answer: Some types of sushi, such as California rolls (which contain steamed crab) and cooked eel, are fine to eat while you're pregnant. But it's best to avoid eating the kinds that contain raw seafood, such as tuna.

Re: California Rolls
Even though they are considered cooked, I gave up the California Rolls anyway. I just can't trust that they are keeping the fish fresh and at the right temperature, and that the 'sell by' dates are accurate (ok, I go to Daikichi sushi! LOL)
Better safe than sick!

Re: California Rolls
I eat the cooked rolls, california, eel, tempura. But without the eggs on the outside. I was told that as long as it's cooked, and the sushi is from a reputable establishment, that it's fine.

Re: California Rolls
I totally eat cooked sushi - California rolls, shrimp, soft shell crab. I just ask them not to put the fish eggs on it. I am not one for deprivation.

Re: California Rolls
Just a quick note (I am a sushi addict).
The concern with sushi is the bacteria. Even though you are eating cooked the one making your sushi is also making raw and NOT washing his hands between making cooked and raw. Thus, although reduced, there is still a risk. So please be careful!

This is exactly why I stayed away from Sushi during my pregnancy. This was really easy for me though as I am not a huge fan, so it wasn't hard to give it up. But I was really concerned that even if I got say a cucumber roll, that it might be contaminated by something raw. Either in the preparation, storage, etc. I dont' see a helluvalot of hand washing going on at the Sushi bar. I do see everything moving very fast, and I am not sure they are required to wash between cooked and raw.

Re: California Rolls
I definitely still eat cooked rolls. California rolls are not sushi, just request no eggs (for you should not be eating those). Shrimp Tempura, eel, crab and anything cooked is fine to eat.

I never thought of that and it is an interesting and important point. However, I just feel like there is a risk in everything you do, even crossing the street. For some reason I am overly sensitive about being treated with kid gloves just because I am pregnant. Of course I want to take care of myself and my baby but I don't want to live in a bubble and have to watch everything I do. Maybe that is naive and even selfish, but I trust my instincts and do what makes me comfortable - within reason.

I completely agree! Sushi like I said was easy for me because I don't like it. But I never gave up my two cups of tea a day and my chocolate. I just couldn't!!! I figured I was watching everywhere else....you have to pick and choose what you are going to be careful about as per your needs and requirements.
Look - as long as we don't eat raw chicken we are probably all just FINE!!!!!! The rules can make you nuts!!!
