I am not asian, however my FH is! I am getting married in 9 days and found out I have to do a tea ceremony after our first dance. Apparently we need to serve tea to the elders and they will then give us $$$$
How long does this take?
There are 9 pair of people we need to serve.....I am freaking out that this is going to take away a good chunk of our reception!!!
Please help!!!

Re: Calling all Asian Brides.....
Good question.....
Most Asian weddings I go to w/ the bride & groom doing the tea ceremony, they usually do it during cocktail hour in a private room or sometimes in the cocktail room. It's supposed to be just close family sometimes close extended family. Depending on the size of his family, it may take either 20 mins. to 45 mins. It's a tradition within the Chinese culture to honor/show respect for the parents and elders in the family....I see mainly Cantonese families do it or really traditional Chinese families. The bride & groom serve tea (sometimes bow) and in return they receive money in a red envelope from the parents or family members. Hope this helped!

Agree with Nov2007bride on the timing. It all depends on how big of a family he has and also, who his family is requesting the tea to be served to. Normally, it takes about no more than 5 mins per couple. We're only going to serve our parents and siblings (just close ones). You should have a talk with your FH about this. Maybe, you could do it way in advance. We are doing it before the ceremony.

Re: Calling all Asian Brides.....
depending on the time of your ceremony... a lto of my family members chose to do it before the ceremony at someones home. it can be pretty time consuming. another option would be to do this during CH but i think you would have to be in chinese attire, so that is a few dress changes right there.
