calling all vertically challenged brides!!!!

I am very short-- 4'10' whats the deal with the wedding dress-- i am afraid if i pick something with stuff at the bottom i will lose it all when they have to cut 99 yards of fabric off--havent started looking for dress yet--won't do that until i lose some weight--but anyone else know what happens?

I haven't looked for dresses yet... but i'm pretty sure they will be able to keep any details that are on the bottom of the dress. I'm not sure how they do it... but i feel like they pretty much wouldn't be able to take it all away..

i'm def. vertically challenged myself..I'm 5'2' and i always wanted a big ballgown and a lot of people keep telling me if it's too big i'm gonna look lost cause i'm too small.. i'm like W T F !! lmaoo...

I think it will work out fine!!

they are mainly cutting fabric in the front of the dress of the bottom....most dresses with a long train have the bustle measured to their height.....the more dress you have the fuller the bustle.....I don't think you should have any worries witht he style you choose. Good Luck

i ordered a maggie dress and they were actually able to order it in petite length which is up to 6'' shorter. we're hoping that the 6'' will do the trick and then it will not need a hem because there is so much lace work on the bottom of my dress. even so, they told me that the seamstresses can do the hem if need be....they work with these intricate dresses everyday so they know what they are doing.....oh! and i have to wear high heels for the ceremony at least! they will figure it all out for you so no worries!

Most dresses with a lot of detail on the bottom are lifted from the waist, not hemmed at the bottom. Also, if you find a dress and buy your shoes for it before ordering the dress, they can measure your exact height and order the dress to be that length.

I think they actually take the gowns up from the waist. Unless you know when there is beading at the bottom and there is a border of plain fabrig at the bottom, they can take some of that too.

Im 5 ft and the dress I got is coming in measured to fit. Its called Hallow to hem I think So they make it to fit your height so no cutting the bottom.

they wouldnt have to cut anything off the bottom and then you lose all the design...when you buy a dress, they custom make it for you...so they take your measurements and everything that is on the bottom will still be there

yes, and even when it's off the rack, like someone said above they lift and remove material from the top/waist to not lose detailing~

exactly. If that were the case all us short girls would be screwed and not have anything on the bottom of our dresses

I'm 4'11'. I ordered my dress with a hollow to hem measurement. It was the best decision I made! All of the beautiful detail on the bottom was perfect and the only alterations my dress needed were up top. It costs a little more but is well worth it.

I'm only 4'11 but i havent looked for dresses yet. But i've herad they can take material from the waist area so you dont lose detailing on the bottom.

I'm 4'11...

On my first dress (first 2 pics in my dress album), the ladies at Macy's had no clue what the seamstress would do . The dress had a lot of embroidery and beading at the bottom, and they weren't sure if the seamstress would cut off the bottom or lift it from the waist. The only issue I had with lifting it from the waist would be that if they keep the embroidery as it is on a normal dress, it might start at a higher place on your body (say mid-thigh instead of starting at your knees) which (for me) looked weird. So what I wanted them to do, was keep the look of the embroidery, but proportion it to my body. In the end, I had the dress custom-made in China because I was able to tell them exactly what to do and it turned out well.

On my second dress (the last 4 pics in my dress album), I didn't want the tulle at the bottom to start too high up on my body so we're actually ordering it in a regular size instead of petite and just cutting the tulle at the bottom so it doesn't overpower me.

There are a lot of different options you have, and it all depends on the way the dress falls on you. When I went to Kleinfeld's it was a totally different experience. The sales person brought the seamstress into the room as I was deciding to talk to me about what could be done with the dress. That was really helpful. I'd suggest you go there to at least look at the styles of dresses and talk to the seamstress. You definitely do NOT have to buy there, but it's a great place to get your questions answered by what I thought were knowledgeable people. When we went I purposely picked out one of each style dress so that I could try everything on.

Sorry this is so long..HTH!!

The place you are ordering your dress from should remind you but incase they don't when you do Hollow to Hem you have to have the exact shoes you are going to wear on your wedding day with you when they take the measurements!!!!

Re: calling all vertically challenged brides!!!!

not all designers do a Hallow to Hem on all of their gowns.
That's usually the best way to go when you're vertically challenged but I was told at two differant shops that i didnt have that option with the gown i fell in love with.

I'm a little nervous about it, but i'm sure it'll be wonderful.

Most wedding gowns are designed for a girl who is 5'9 and plans to wear a 2' heel. Isnt that crazy??

Some designers have a way to order it 3' shorter... but it costs more and honestly, you'd have to have more than that altered so if I were you I'd talk to the seamstress you plan to use and see what they suggest. Mine said not to bother, b/c i'm going to have to pay for alterations twice if I do that.

Some gowns will have to be taken up from the waist so that you do not lose any of the detail on the bottom. A gown i loved would have to be done that way, i decided not to get it because i did not like where the embroidery would be after the alterations. It would have hiked it up from below my knees to starting almost at my hip line.

It all comes down to your personal taste, as well as the designer you choose.
