Random question but what are you supposed to do if you already had a bridal shower but you call off a wedding?

Re: Calling off a wedding
I know someone who was a guest at a shower that the wedding was canceled. The girl sent all the gifts back
But I wouldn't expect to get anything back, I would just feel so bad!

Not sure if there is a certain protocol, I personally would give back all the gifts to the guests. Whether you return the gifts and send them a check or just return the gifts. Thats just what I would do.

Re: Calling off a wedding
i would NEVER expect someone to give me the gift back. They are going through a hard enough time, its a gift... use is however you want, return it, keep it...

Apparently, you are supposed to return the gifts, but how can you? I mean if they are opened/used or money was spent?

Re: Calling off a wedding
You are supposed to return the gift, and in the event that it has been used, you are supposed to give $ in the amount back.
I would feel terrible for the folks involved and wouldn't expect anything back, but that's what etiquette states.

Thats what I was thinking but I know some people who send the gifts back and I was just wondering how if you have already opened things.

I would never expect to receive the gift or money back. A gift is a gift IMO. I would think she would be going through alot to worry about that.

Re: Calling off a wedding
It happened to me...ex-FH called off our wedding 12 days before we were supposed to be married. I didn't return the shower gifts. Some we had already used. My side told me they didn't want them back, and well, I really didn't care about his side at that point.

You are so right! It such a heartbreaking thing to go through, it's almost 2 years since this happened to me and I miss my FH every hour of every day. Trust me, the last thing you want to worry about is gifts.
To the OP, I hope everything is ok.

Re: Calling off a wedding
I'll preface my response by saying that I am very happily married and couldn't be more thankful by the way things have turned out!
I was engaged once before...years ago...and I called off our wedding off 8 months before the wedding date (best decision of my life). I didn't have a shower (yet...that many months out from the wedding) but we did have a relatively small e-party. I did my very best with gifts and money...especially to my side. As many people have stated - it was a stressful and hectic time so I was unable to return everything. But again, I did my best.
