marry 2 people who aren't Catholic or even religious? One of my dad's patients is a priest and offered to marry us at the RH. FH and I both grew up catholic, but are not religious anymore. FH is actually a hard core atheist and I have never had confirmation. I don't want to go to any classes, nor do I want any religion in the ceremony. My parents seem to have the impression that this priest will overlook the classes and the fact that I'm not confirmed and perform the ceremony anyway. I don't see how this is possible though. We just want an officiant who will give us a nice, non religious ceremony. The priest is a very nice guy, but how can a priest perform a non religious ceremony?

I would imagine you'd need to hold some sort of 'certification' to marry people so maybe the priest could marry you, just not hold a Catholic ceremony for you. To my knowledge a Catholic ceremony can not be held outside of a church so you wouldnt be able to get married in a Catholic ceremony at your rh even with all the 'paperwork'

I highly doubt a priest would do a non-religious type ceremony... it just doesnt make sense upon hearing it .... would you/your fam consider a reg officiant? b/c i heard that even if a priest marries you outside, that it still wont be recognized by the church b/c they really arent suppossed to do that...

Re: Can a catholic priest
a Catholic priest can only marry you in a Catholic church, they're not allowed to perform ceremonies outside of the church but you might find some lenient ones that will do it. As far as not being confirmed and FH not being Catholic, I think you might have to be confirmed only if they do it in the church.
Me and FH are both Catholic, but he hasnt done his confirmation, our priest is going to confirm him a month before our wedding. If you're both catholic and want the full ceremony then you both have to be confirmed. But I think they will marry you if one is Catholic and one isn't, but I'm not sure how that works. I know our priest asked if we were both Catholic and when we said yes he said 'Ok that saves us extra paperwork' -- whatever that means.
Talk to the priest your dad knows, he might be willing to perform the ceremony for you anyway.
Good Luck

I don't think it makes sense either. It doesn't make a difference to me whether or not a church recognizes the marriage as long as it's legal. I don't care if we're married by a priest, rabbi, judge, monk, whatever! I just want a nice ceremony.

That's what I want too... the deacon that is supposed to marry us is sick???? and this new guy is taking over for the time being, but I think he is super cool and I want to ask him if he could marry us instead - he even laughed when I gave our names... he said, wait a second? You do know what your name is going to be, right? Hehehe... it never gets old!

FH is being a pain though. He will get mad if the word 'god' is used at any point in the ceremony. I'm not a believer, but I'm more lenient. I think years of Catholic school messed him up...

I went to catholic school too and can def vouch for feelin that way! i originally didnt want any mention of god in my ceremony either but im throwin a few in to appease the religious part of my fam... it means more to them to hear that than it means to me to not have it in there at all!

Re: Can a catholic priest
Some Catholic priests may marry you at your hall, but it will not be a Catholic ceremony and I do not believe your marriage will be recognized by the Catholic church (Not 100% but I could be wrong).
Marriage is technically a sacrament to the church so if you havent received your other sacraments, some churches may not marry you in the church. It really depends on your priest and church really. Being married in the church or by a priest anywhere just makes your marriage recognized by God.
FH was only baptized and the church does not recognize him has Catholic (which pisses him off and pushes him even further away from being confirmed) but our church will marry us and obviously he cannot receive communion.
It really depends. Speak to your priest and just find out the details. He will probably be the only one to completely clarify the situation for you. Just be up front with him and im sure he will work with you. Honestly the church is hurting for money and parishioners so alot of things they used to not do, they are reconsidering now .

Hey . . . if you find a priest that will do a non religous ceremony at the RH - let me know if he does interfaith. I am looking for a priest to marry Fh and I (Fh desperately wants a priest - eventhough he has not been to church in years) And I refuse to get married in a church or do anything that is religious.

Re: Can a catholic priest
I was told by my church that priests that marry you outside of the church are usually retired priests (didnt know that even existed to be honest) and that the marriage is not recognized by the church. Unless there is extreme circumstances ex: getting married in the hospital due to some tragic circumstance, or your having a interfaith marriage where the priest goes to a temple and preforms the ceremony with I guess it would be the rabbi, then it would be recognized.
So in your case you might not need your sacraments to get married at the hall. I have my sacraments and my FH has none but we are still allowed to have a catholic ceremony in my church since they are a little more laxed and said although they strongly suggest he makes his sacraments they will not push anything he doesn't believe in on him. I was shocked that I could still get married there with out him having them.

Re: Can a catholic priest
I didn't read all of the responses but: A priest can marry you outside of the Church and it is still a legal marriage in the state of NY. He is legally allowed to marry you religious or not religious. Since you want a non-demonitational ceremony I would probably meet with him and thank him for his kind offer but you feel more comfortable going a different way. He could be offering since he is a friend of your dad. If he is willing to abide by your rules then go for it, if he is going to say things that your FH may be uncomfortable with I wouldn't even take the chance.
As for the recognition in the Catholic Church I don't think it it is something you need to worry about. But if somewhere down the line you did want it recognized it is as easy as some paperwork and a blessing.

Re: Can a catholic priest
I checked the canons on the Rockville Centre Diocese website when I was thinking of using my hall, and it said that a priest can't marry you outside a church, but there may be a special dispensation for some, though it seemed like a strict rule . . . they can't even marry you outside.

Re: Can a catholic priest
I just got in touch with my friend who used this priest that travels and i believe is more lenient when it comes to customizing the ceremony, I went to a renewal of vows ceremony that he did and it was beautiful. I think it was this board that people were looking for priests that will go to the RH. I was told ) he charges around $500. (but this was about two years ago so it may differ)
heres his website with his contact info

Hope it helps someone!

My parents tried to get married right outside the church in the garden and the priest said yes but last minute the priest found out he could not do it and shoved the whole thing inside the chapel bc the church was beign used that day.
