Can A Photographer Do This?

Can A Photographer Do This?

While reviewing the fine print of my photo contract, I noticed the following:

. . .'It is understood that we are the exclusive official photographer for your event. Others taking pictures will be permitted ONLY at our discretion!'

I didn't realize that they could tell you who can and can't take pictures at YOUR wedding! I'm sure that they won't harass my precious grandmother who may snap her disposable Kodak here and there . . .but, what about my uncle who has a nice 35 mm camera?

Comments?? Experiences??

I don't get it- you are paying them the same anyway- what do they care?

I've never heard of that. People always take pitures at weddings. I woud definately ask them about it.

Maybe they mean there can not be another photographer from another company?? Call and ask them what they mean. Maybe they can clear it up for you

Seems strange, right??

***Ladies, please be sure to read the tiny, tiny print on your vendor contracts!!!****

I will definately call, but, I wanted to make sure that I didn't look like a fool asking about this. I thought that maybe this was very common . . .but, I guess not!

My photographer told me (in a more diplomatic way, I can't remember the exact wording) that it means that she can ask someone to get out of her way if it impacts her job.

For example, my grandmother is NOTORIUS for running in front of photographers at weddings to get 'the best picture'. My photographer told me that if she's in the way, she'll nicely ask her to wait until she's done, or let my grandmother take her pciture first and then take hers.

It was in my contract with Imagine. Lia explained it exactly the same way clpunch did.

What clpunch said makes sense. You should call your photographer to find out though.

It is not that unusual actually, in fact wild rose has it in their contract. I don't mind that b/c I don't want other people filming at my wedding. However I would be upset if it was in my photographers contract.
Yes, they can do that. You need to talk to them about how strictly they will enforce this item. They may put it in their contract for a number of reasons.
1) to make sure family members do not get in their way when trying to get important shots, or
2) to ensure that you will be forced to buy all photos from them b/c they will have the only photographic record of your day.

Unless you talk to them I would think it would also mean no table cameras as well.

As I said this can be a standard clause in a photo contract - would I want one NO, but it does benefit them in the deal.

Give them a call and find out how strictly they enforce this policy. You don't want to wait until the wedding day and be told no one else can snap a picture.

It was in my contract as well. They don't want you hiring another professional or something that's gunna get in their way. If there's another person taking lots of pics, their work will be harder. So the pictures they get to you won't be as good, or there may not be as many cuz someone else was in the way.

It makes complete sense to me. In my case, the photographer took that clause out since it's a Sikh wedding and we wanted an Indian photographer as well for the ceremony.

I think they mean other professionals. And to be honest, I wouldnt have minded of our photog told some of our family to back off while we were taking the family.group shots. There is a minimum of 5 pictures of each group and one sometimes two of the shots are worth considering because people in the group were looking at other cameras

That was in my contract and I had no problems with it. I did not want anyone in Lia's way. Lia's pix were my priority, all others after her. Photographers might not state in in their contract but they do have priority over all others. I am sure all bride and grooms would want it that way.

I would hope my guest did not get in her way or would do anything to not let her capture my day uniterupted. If you are not comfortable then maybe you should book elsewhere or ask them to remove that line. Then you can state to the photographer, if you are taking a pix and someone is blocking you, just go right ahead and take it without interuppting them. I am sure when you got your proofs you would be none too pleased.
