Can anyone tell me about N. Babylon???

We've decided to expand our search to include Babylon & N. Babylon.... but I've heard there are good/bad parts. Does anyone live around here?
Thanks for your help!

Re: Can anyone tell me about N. Babylon???

my husband grew up in North Babylon... definitely some parts are nicer than others. But he said that the school districts aren't as good as they used to be. Especially the high schools. Not sure if that is important to you yet, but that was his main observation about the area now. Also, some of the shopping centers aren't what they used to be. Maybe a big part of it is because of Deer Park Ave and all the kids hang out on the strip and stuff. But his house is very cute and right near Belmont Park. A nice little neighborhood.

I've heard the same thing, that it really depends in that neighborhood.

High schools aren't a major concern just yet.... We hope to buy a home and in a few years, upgrade to a nicer/bigger home that we will live in for the rest of our lives. Can't afford THAT home just yet- not in LI anyway

I grew up in North Babylon. Graduated from NB High in '83. Its a great town and I have heard that the high school isnt what is used to be. Our house was on Higgins Street....its off Miller Ave. Our house boardered on the Junior High's playing field. We had a HUGE piece of property.

Just like any other town on LI, there are nice areas and not so nice areas.

I personally would never live in the area that is north of Southern State Parkway (Exit 37) and across from Belmont Park Maintanence area...I think its called Belmont Estates....it was a crappy area when I was growing up and cant imagine that its any better today.

Good Luck!!

I know the village of Babylon is REAL nice. I had a friend that lived on Smith Street (how funny...my maiden name!)

it depends on the area...... from what ive heard it seems your fine if you stay south of the southern state......also most of the houses south of the ss will have sewers verses the north side with cesspools

Re: Can anyone tell me about N. Babylon???

Hi!

In early spring DH and I purchased a home in West Babylon (North Babylon SD) a very small community called Belmont Estates immediately North of SSP.

Having grown-up and been schooled in the Stony brook/ Setauket…Three Village SD area, I cannot speak to the history of Belmont Estates. However, I can tell you that both of my immediate neighbors have lived in the community for over 25 years and the sellers were there for 38 years before we came along. My husband and I stalked the neighborhood like lunatics to the point where we new a whole host of people in the vicinity before even purchasing and moving-in. By in large we have heard no eyebrow raising comments from any of the residents. BE has a very active civic association and is largely made-up of retirees and younger (upper 30’s) couples who overwhelmingly are said to be educators and police officers. To date, we are very happy with our quiet little community that we have found it borderline too quiet, primarily homeowners that keep–up their property well, and diverse (multi-culturalism is very important to DH & I).

In terms of schools, DH is a LI Assistant Principal and researched the North Bab. Schools thoroughly. While we understand that the North Bab. Schools are by no way close to “top tier” LI schools…in terms of State ELA & math scores they are not at the bottom either. We believe that one of the best tools that you can provide a child with is a high quality education so this was indeed a concern. However, we recognize that we, like most others nowadays will not retire (so-to-speak) in our first home and have resolved to cross the “school” bridge when we come to it…especially since we have no kids at this point.

While I disagree with the adverse opinion given with regard to my community, in particular I do understand and respect that of others. However, I would encourage you and anyone to independently survey your area of interest thoroughly to formulate your own unbiased and personal perspective.

Sorry I can’t attest to the greater North Bab area but I am still learning my way around
Much luck! ?

I agree 100% with akatyme. We have friends that live near Belmont Estates, just South of SSP. They love it. Yes, it is a diverse neighborhood, but all are educated (Professors and police officers). These friends have money to live ANYWHERE on LI, they are loaded. They choose the area right south of Belmont Estates.... They love it. They also researched the schools and are thrilled at where they live. Remember, I said they have MONEY, they could have bought a house anywhere in LI.... That should be enough said.

I live in North Babylon (Poet Section), it is the West Islip/North Babylon border. We love our neighborhood. For what we paid and what we got we are so happy! Elementry schools are excellent (our primary concern), since by the time our kids are in HS, who knows where we will be. We are extremly happy with out decisions and are thrilled to be homeowners!

One of my Grad School Professors is the principal for N. Babylone Elementary and she is such a wonderful, caring, kind individual. She was a great teacher and she runs a tight ship over there.

Going into teaching I've heard many wonderful things about that district (if that is a concern). I think the neighborhood is nice, it is just your ordianary LI town, nothing especially great or especially bad about it, ya know. Good Luck..

Oh and I just started at MTI Realty on the weekends, they seem like a great Real Estate to work with 587-3900 is the phone number if you are looking for an agent give me a call, I'm just a receptionist but I can hook you up with one!

Babylon Village schools are much better. It is a smaller population. The HS is 7 - 12.

North Babylon HS is not the greatest. There are lot of kids who go to that school who do not live in the area (same problem with Deer Park HS). I wouldn't send my children there. With that said you have a long time before that happens, so I wouldnt be to worried about the HS. You can always send your kids to private school.

I heard West Babylon schools are suppose to be good.

Good Luck!
