Can I book a florist before I choose my BM dresses & colors?

I'm planning from out of town, and taking the bar exam this summer, so I won't really have time to choose my bridesmaids dresses (or my dress, for that matter) till September, but I'm getting married 8/31/03, & I'm worried that September is too late to start looking for a florist. Any suggestions?

The florist was one of the first things we booked when planning for our Sept. '01 wedding. It just sort of worked out that way. At the time we booked them, we hadn't done any dress searches, wasn't sure of the colors, and we weren't even sure exactly what kind of flowers we wanted. It didn't really matter, because we didn't end up making concrete decisions about the flowers until about one month before our wedding .. it all worked out perfectly.

For pricing reasons, the florists you check out will want some kind of idea of what you might be looking for in terms of flower types, but just check with them on their policies, and let them know you haven't made decisions on the dresses and colors yet. They should be flexible.

I do not think waiting until September is waiting too long to book your florist. Our florist is one of the last vendors we booked, which I did about 8 months before the wedding. If you wait, and you are getting married the following August, that is still 10 months. Instead of going thru the hassle of trying to figure out flowers, ribbon colors, etc without knowing what your dress looks like or your girls (your bouquet shape and style could definitely be influenced by your dress), I say wait until you make a decision, then book the florist. You will still have plenty of time! Good Luck!

From what I've been told from the florists themselves was to wait until 6 months before the wedding. I went ahead and booked the florist around Christmas time for my August 31, 2002 wedding. So it was about 8.5 months before. We only did that because we live in North Carolina, so our trips up there are limited. I think September is plenty of time, so don't worry. Good luck!

I booked my florist early (I'm using Burton's) and it was a good thing -- I got their last set of high centepiece holders. At the time I thought my BM would be in dark jewel tones -- and since then it's changed to silver & white! It's no big deal though since they don't make you choose your flowers until a couple of months before. The major thing you need to know is -- how exotic is your taste in flowers... If you reserve the florist & get a price on a baby's breath bouquet -- that price will shoot up a lot if you turn around and decide later you want some exotic, out-of-season flower...

I didn't start looking a florists until about 8 months before the wedding - I didn't book until 6 months. I think it is a good idea to have your colors picked out just because if you don't, some florists won't be able to give you a quote. Unless you know specifically what you want for BMs, they won't really be able to 'construct' a complimentary bouquet without a color. One florist I went to requested a swatch for when I came in for an appointment - I didn't have one and it didn't matter but I did know the color. I wouldn't worry about starting to look in Sept. -

You'll have plenty of time, I have a friend who change her florist 2 week before her wedding because she was very unhappy with the original one, and everything worked out just fine. I wouldn't wait that long, but September should be fine.

I think, with the exception of using high centerpiece holders, you can delay booking your florist...remember they CAN do more than one wedding on a given day.
