I hate to come here with this but I need to get this off my chest and I think people here will understand that the following a potentially upsetting situation. When my fiance and I got engaged, we decided that we wanted our wedding party to be a MOH & BM and the rest would be our nieces and nephews, ages 5-16. He comes from a big family and only one of the kids is my nephew who is 11 and lives in Atlanta with his mother, my brother's ex-wife. He is really a great child and besides my fiance, he is my favorite person in the world. My brother has never been a good father although he pays child support, he doesn't really seem to give a damn but I've worked through trying to accept what I can't control with that. Anyway, I am paying for my nephews tux for the wedding because no one offered to pay although it was agreed he would be in the wedding. OK, fine, I'm actually OK with that. But now, my brother has also said he is not willing to pay for my nephews plane ticket to NY. I guess we will be paying for that too. I tried to have a discussion (actually a very calm one) with my brother about it and he cut me off and said he would call me back and that was 2 weeks ago. I can't help but feel anger because I was there and participated in his first and second weddings. He now has a second child and like the first (my nephew) I have been there with gifts, showers etc. I hate to think I am about money with this but truthfully, I feel like our relationship is so one-sided and it really hurts. Then just now my ex-sister in law just said that it would be OK with her if I didnt have my nephew in the wedding for a few reasons, mainly that she doesn't want him to take off 2 days of school and can't come for the rehearsal if I have it 2 nights before the wedding. He's in 6th grade, I must be missing the importance of those 2 days. I just told her I was too upset to talk about it anymore. And then there's another thing with my mother but I won't even go into that. Well, I just needed to vent and I just wish my wedding mattered to these people. It's sort of depressing at the moment. Sorry it's so long.
You have me thinking again...maybe it would sound better if ours said:

Your brother sounds rather selfish!
Is he coming to your wedding? I can understand why you'd be hurt! Let a few days pass - maybe he'll re-think the $$$ thing!
By the way, my wedding party is like yours! We have 4 adults and 6 kids ages 7-14 - all our nieces and nephews! I love it!!! (2 MOH's - I couldn't choose between my 2 little sisters - I have FIVE altogether! + 2 brothers).

Of course you can
Elizabeth,
Don't apologize. I can sympathize with your relationship with your brother. Things aren't so hot between my brother and me either. But anyway, some people just care about one thing, themselves, no matter what. And for those of us not like that, it's hard for us to believe people can actually be like that, especially at the really important times in life.

Thanks Kathi, Kel, Trish
You words are all very kind and helpful. I was in such bad space yesterday and it really helped to get it down on paper (the computer :o) I have to agree with all you have each said and of course I will do whatever I need to have my nephew there, that has always been my goal. I know what I would do if the shoe was on the other foot - not that I'm a saint - and I have to find more acceptance of this situation. Just to clarify my ex-sister-in-law has luckily been wonderful with our family in terms of my nephew staying close and I am still very good friends with her. Anyway, thanks for providing the ear and advice, it really , really helps. I'm off to my MOH's wedding this afternoon at Stewart Manor. I am so excited for her, also that the snow is melting on the roads and the sun is shining. Have a wonderful day everyone!

So true about him being there as the important thing and the issue between my bro & ex sis in law. I was just so upset at the moment I first posted that but have definitely been gaining acceptance. I guess the world doesn't stop just because Derek and I decided to get married :o) People are going to be who they are. I think the most disappointing part is the realization that our relationship is really one-sided. I have been involved and excited for him in his many big events and it's seemingly not reciprocated for me. It's not just the plane ticket, it's the lack of enthusiasm and I have to let that go too. It's not even the money. At this point, I mean my fiance and I are paying for a whole wedding already what's another $200. Thanks for responding. It helps and I will check out AirTran. (OK, I'm sick of hearing me talk about this! Back to the planning...)
Usually you would put it on either your homeowner's policy, or a renter's policy. I don't know if anyone will insure just the ring. Somebody probably does. I'd check with your current insurance carrier first.
