Re: Can Pets be Mentally Challenged?
I don't know if it's been studied at all, but I believe that it's possible. My Dachshund has ZERO learning capacity. She's simply not trainable and doesn't understand the word 'no'. I used to get so mad at her, but I realized that it may not be her fault.

Did you get her as a puppy? We found our dog as a stray and sometimes when she doesn't 'get' things I just think it's because she wasn't taught it as a puppy.

Re: Can Pets be Mentally Challenged?
My mom has a dog who escaped from a puppy mill. I don't know that I would call her mentally challenged but she has definite 'issues'. Getting her to pee outside was a huge challenge because I guess it was not expected of her before we got her. And she still freaks out if my dad comes in the house with a baseball hat on (or any tall man, for that matter). We are pretty sure she was abused.

Re: Can Pets be Mentally Challenged?
we had an autistic kitten once. she used to run up the walls... literally. We were all scared of her. seriously, when she'd come into the room, my family would bascially huddle in the corner to keep away from her. one day she freaked out, jumped through the screen and ran away.
by the way, my sister named her The little mermaid, so we still tease her that it was her fault that she gave the cat an identity crisis.

Yes, I got her when she was a puppy and she'll be 2 years old in June. We tried SO hard to train her properly, but it was nearly impossible. We had no problems with our other dog, so we're pretty sure it's not our training abilities. If you could see her, you'd be able to tell from her actions that she's not the brightest crayon in the box.

Re: Can Pets be Mentally Challenged?
yes. i have seen a cat that was abused and almost drowned and from that time on, he was not a normal cat. the people who adopted him said that he was the strangest cat ever and it was probably from the lack of oxygen.

My parents' family cat sleeps under the wood-burning stove and has singed his tail but stays there. People have commented that maybe he is slow because he doesn't react. I think animals could be challenged.

Yep, I think they can. I've been around a bunch of cats and I think it is possible.
Actually, I have a handicapped cat. When his mother was pregnant, she contracted a virus, which slowed the development of my cat's brain. He is normal in just about every way except that his sense of balance is messed up. He has trouble walking, but he still manages to get around. He has adapted very well to his disability.

Having spent a lot of time with this dog, it is so true! I mean, how hard is it to go ON the wee wee pad!?

Re: Can Pets be Mentally Challenged?
I had a kitten (teenage ha ha...she wasn't quite a big cat yet) who ran up the walls. It turned out she was in heat. She ran out and did her thing and returned to normal.
