Why FI uses the ATM card like it conected to the magic money machine ???? He NEVER checks the balance of our joint account and buys things on his debit when there is not enough money in the bank??? Does he never check the balance before buying anything?
Sorry just had to get that out - does anyone else's FI / DH do this and if so how does one 'nip this in the bud' so to speak? I really cant afford countless overdraft fees, ahhhhh.

What works for me is Separate accounts.
People think it is the worst thing in the world, but it saves a ton of arguments.
Since this is not an option for you, my advice is that you tell him that each time one of you makes a purchase you must consult the other.
Save your Atm receipts and you will have to be the one who keeps track of the balances, since he can't.

My DH always ask me what we can spend and what we can. I tell him whatever he needs and its reasonable just put on American Express and I will pay it off at the end of the month. Usually right before purchasing something big he will call and let me know.

Tell me about needing money managment help, I love him to death but this kid is in lala land about money sometimes plain and simple. I never thought to get an Amex that's a very good suggestion! - he can use that instead and then I can pay the bill at the end of the month.

I must admit, I am the one that thinks I have a magic money machine. I just use the card until it won't let me anymore. I am working on this though.....

thank god FH is soo good about money.. we both have a joint account as well as separate accounts.. it eliminates all those little headaches!

You should keep a joint account - - no ATM card for it, and separate accounts for things you each want to buy without having to explain it to the other. It works best - - trust me.

We manage fine with one account but we've set ourselves (each) a budgeted amount for weekly spending for miscellaneous cash items, ie: gas for cars, haircuts, books & magazines, lunches and so on. If extraordinary expenses pop up we just check before withdrawling.
However, both of us are cautious about overspending - when you've got a freespender it may not work as well. Even separate accounts could still result in high overdraft fees if he's still spending the magic money, and a credit card could just swap the overdraft for interest payments if you can't pay it off each month.
Another option would be to give him a set amount of cash each week so he has to stick within that if it's really a big problem.
