Can someone please tell me about the 1 hour glucose test.
I have to go next week for that along with the 50 million viles of blood work. What exactly happens...do I drink that stuff and wait an hour and then the do the blood work? Or do they do blood work then I drink the stuff...wait an hour and then they do more? What does the stuff taste like? How much do I have to drink? What do i do for that hour...just sit in the waiting room? Oh and I can't eat anything either...right? Well can I atleast have water? Sorry about all the qustions but I don't like needles so I need to mentally prepare myself in advance!

You drink the orange drink (hope they give you that, it tastes best) You drink it exactly one hour before they draw your blood. You have to tell them when you drank it. The orange tastes like really sugary orange soda. I kinda liked it but the bubbles made me feel blah. You have to drink the whole bottle. Its like a soda can size bottle. They didnt give you the drink before? I had mine in the fridge... it tasted better. I dont remember about the eatting or drinking. Im sure there has to be some fasting otherwise it wouldnt work properly but Im not sure. Its been 2 years. The worst part is the blood, the rest is a breeze
ETA: You are having bloodwork done already for GD??? How many weeks are you? I didnt have mine till 26 weeks or so.

They didn't give me anything...just the name of the lab to go to and the super long list of things they want me to be tested for. I'm going to call the lab tomorrow and find out...maybe i could pick it up the day before....why should I have to sit there all that time.

I went at 28 weeks. I had to drink this small bottle of orange 'soda' after fasting after 9pm the night before. I couldnt even drink water. After drinking it, they took blood 1 hour later. It wasnt as bad as I heard it was.

wow thats early for the glucose test. Altough I had like 7 vials of blood taken in my 7th week. All tests were negative except I have A- blood type and will need a rhogam shot in my 28th week and then 3 days later if my babys blood is + blood type

I just went 2 weeks ago to Quest. They took a vile of blood, then gave me a lemon/lime flat saod type drink. When I finished it, i waited exactly an hour and then they took another vile of blood. About a week later I got the results. I just passed thank goodness. Good luck. It really is not bad at all. You can leave and come back, but just make sure they take the blood again at the 1 hour mark or you will have to go back another day and to the whole process over.

How did you know you passed...did your Dr, notify you or did Quest send you the results....my next Drs. appt. isn't until the end of September....i don't want to wait a whole month to find out results.

I had 21 vials of blood taken 2 weeks ago and at that time I was only 5 weeks.
You cannot drink or eat anything before you take the Glucose test.. There are several flavors of drinks to choose from. They have Lemon/Lime, Coke flavor and Orange.. I had Orange and it tasted GREAT!! It tasted like Sunkist.. mmmmm
You have to wait 1 hour after you drink the soda. The nurse usually times when you start drinking it and then when you show them your finished with the bottle.. Then you start your 1 hour waiting process.. My advice.. bring a book to read! And make sure you have something to eat after the blood tests are done.. you get quite hungry from not eating.
Good Luck! If your nurse is gental you wont feel a thing..
PS: if you get squeemish look the other way when they draw your blood....they take a lot!!!

I thought they don't do the test for the blood sugar until later in pregnancy.

It seems as tho everyones Dr's are different, I guess.
I know the main reason for all my blood tests & glucose test right away is because I dont know any of my genetic history & I havent had a full exam in a long time, so my Dr. just checked off everything - the Glucose being one of them.
I know in a few months I'm going to have the glucose test done again.

Quest sent the results to my doctor and I called them. It took about a week.
I was only tested for this at 28 weeks. But I guess each doctor is different.
