What the whole 'debmaher' thing was about?

As a n00b, I keep seeing her name referenced in light of the last drama, and I'm interested in the backstory

(what can I say, I'm weird & nosy like that... 'net drama is like a bad reality show for me)

the funny thing is-- I can remember the FIRST TIME I came across an *internet fake* and how shocking it was to me... But I've experienced it so many other times that it's like I'm desensitized by it... BUT IT STILL PEAKS MY INTEREST...

my sister made a reference to it on the lifamilies boards so im assuming she (my sis) was on these boards around that time.. She could always tell me but I won't talk to her until tomorrow.

i need to know NOW ...lol

no this is from the 05 or 06 board, I only know the name because it is randomly brought up any time there is crazy drama

The legend of DebMaher.......

She *joined* LIW in 8/04 and was a really active poster (like 6000 posts by December). She became *friends* with alot of regulars on the boards. In Dec 04, she left on vacation and was never heard from again. The tsunamli had happend, so a firestorm started that MAYBE she had been in Thailand.

Came to find out through investigating by Ron and a few of the more tech-savvy posters that this person who had been such an active member of the community was actually a complete fake.

This wasn't some random fake, she had really been an active participants on the boards, had met quite a few of the girls, and had really ingrained herself into the community. If I remember correctly (although I could be very wrong) she had attended GTGs.

For those of you who have made very close friends on this board- imagine finding out that one of them was a total fake.

It caused many girls to be hurt and ALOT of stress on the boards because it reminded everyone you cannot trust ANYONE......

out of curiosity...what do you mean, 'fake'? like she wasnt actually engaged and made up that she was making wedding arrangements? was she trying to make it seem like she died in the tsunami?

If you search her posts, she left on vacation sometime in early December and was never heard from again. Some people thought she may have died in the tsunami- regardless, it was later found that she was not a bride, not engaged, not planning a wedding. I'm not sure if she ever went to GTGs, but she did develop off-LIW personal friendships with girls from the board.

Think about it- it's not too hard to 'fake' being anything if you have enough time on your hands. People can be pretty sick when they want to be.

It's too bad all the threads regarding the topic were pulled- it was quite the interesting drama around her.....

I saw her name being thrown around on LIF on the thread about the drama here... I search for her, but was too lazy to investigate into it....
