I am having the wedding at a really strict church (no throwing anything, no runner, no going back into the building for pics). I'm afraid to ask them if I can bring in my own musicians - or to be cheaper MAYBE have them play a CD or something. Is that ridiculous or cheesy?????
I just don't like it when I go to weddings and the house musicians mess up - I always thought that I wouldn't have that happen at my wedding, but it is harder than I thought.

Re: Can you bring outside musicians to your RC Church
Most Churches frowm upon it (and now you are a HORRIBLE person for even considering it and you're going straight to hell !! SOrry, can't help the sarcasm sometimes) - They might let you bring additional people in, but they still make you PAY theirs !! I'm SO jaded by the whole Church thing it's unbelievable !

Re: Can you bring outside musicians to your RC Church
My church has the same rules about throwing stuff, etc and on their 'contract' it says they 'discourage' outside musicians but you are allowed to bring them so I am bringing in a harpist.
BUT... regardless of who you bring in, the church musicians and music director still have to get paid even if they don't play.

YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME - you have to pay for them even if you don't use them
My FH is so fed up with the church - he is just doing it for me really. I'm trying to keep it in my head that if everyone bent the rules, it wouldn't be much of a church. Thats the only way I stay calm hearing how strict they get.
where would you put the harpist - in the front or in the choir? I figure if I'm paying I'd like people to see, but to put them in front - they'd pretty much beon the alter.

Yep... that's correct. $275 to be exact.
In the front??? No, no no!!! My church would NEVER allow that. The harpist plays up in the balcony thingie that the organist plays from... nobody can see them at all.

Re: Can you bring outside musicians to your RC Church
I don't think they really care if you bring in an outside musician(s). I haven't had any problems with that at all. However, they usually make you pay for their 'in-house' musicians and music director whether you use them or not. And to avoid any problems you should run everything by their music director to ensure you don't run into a problem the day of (ie. won't let you play a song they consider 'inappropriate'). But my recommendation since you're paying for them anyway is make them come. Even if they are just a backup for your outside musicians God forbid something happened to them. Won't be what you want per say but at least they could get the job done.

Re: Can you bring outside musicians to your RC Church
My church stated I MUST use their organist, but if I want to bring other musicians to accompany her I can do that. Meanwhile one of my Mom's closest friends is an organist and it would've meant so much more if she could be the one to play. It is a little ridiculous.

Re: Can you bring outside musicians to your RC Church
I'm bringing in a string trio for my mass but we had to retain the organist to play the psalms.....$100 to play for 5 minutes! What a gig that is.

I had such a vision of what I wanted the church part to be like - and now I think from what the brides are saying is that it has to be their way - or no way

Re: Can you bring outside musicians to your RC Church
We had an 'outside' string quartet (capriccio ensemble) and used the music director (who had a beautiful voice) and organist as well. Not sure if we had to use them - it wasn't an issue for us since we wanted to anyway. Natalie (the head of the string quartet) spoke with the music director (aka soloist) prior to the wedding and coordinated everything with him perfectly on the wedding day. The strings played prior to the wedding, during the prelude, parents entrance and bridal processional and played along with the organist when I walked down the aisle. You really need the singer to sing the hymns (sp?) during the mass if you are having one. The strings played a few times during the wedding and at the end and after. During a few parts, they played together with the organist. It worked out perfectly and sounded beautiful! Talk to your music director and don't lose heart!

Re: Can you bring outside musicians to your RC Church
We had trumpeteers, but they played with the organist and singer. They were from an outside company and not the Church trumpeteers, but they had no problem with it.

Re: Can you bring outside musicians to your RC Church
hmmmm....I am having a celtic bagpiper for outside the church, but in the church I know they are providing me with musicians. I guess you should ask the priest that interviewed you.
