Has anyone ever just picked a (rc) church close to the reception hall - can you do that to make it easier for guests, or do you have to be a member of the church to get married there?

Depends what kind of church. Roman Catholic - not really. You have to get a dispensation from your parish and it's a whole process which doesn't have a guaranteed outcome in the end. Not sure about other religions.

I had trouble with Catholic Churches for that reason. Some will say yes, but some will be mean. And some will politely say no.
We ended up going with an Episcopal church for other reasons, but it was a little easier. Although some of them said no too.

I think you have to belong to the church some how. It might make it hard if you don't considering you'll have to do Pre-cana as well.
